I miss the Sears store when it was downtown, after it moved to a new mall 15 or so years ago it was not the same and I did not venture too far from the tools. The downtown store had a candy department that could be smelled all over the first floor.

My dad (WWII vet) worked as an appliance/furnace repairman for Sears for over 35 years & retired with a nice pension from there. He was proud to work for Sears & it was a great company then. I remember the teal service van parked in our driveway (that was back when the employee kept them at their home instead of at the shop). If I'd missed the school bus, I'd ask Dad to take me to school in the van & he'd always say "No, that's for work. It's not your taxi." .

Just this week it was announced they're closing the last retail stores in our area....including 2 mall anchor locations. It's sad to see them go. I still have the teal blanket with a Sears Roebuck and Co logo on it that my dad got way back in the early 60's & my parent's Kenmore upright freezer (with a teal plastic interior) from 1959 that's still running (bet any appliance made today wouldn't last 60 years!).

The last one in the area will close in march and will seem funny getting Craftsman tools at Lowes where I will be heading in a few minutes to get a 1/4 drive 13 MM deep socket.

Ok, lets take a trip down memory lane. This thread and the talk about Craftsman tools got me to thinking. Back in the day, Sears had a lot of different proprietary "house" brands. Craftsman tools and equipment, Kenmore appliances, Silvertone electronics, Ted Williams shotguns and sporting goods, JC Higgins bicycles and sporting goods. I believe they sold Elgin boats and outboard motors. I'm thinking there were others. What do you recall?

I had an "Allstate" Vespa motor scooter, 1959 or 60, can't remember.

I remember a Coldspot refrigerator. It was rounded on the edges & the pull handle was always coming loose. In the 1970's I remember Dad painting the door a deep brown - as was fashionable then. We had an aluminum pop bottle opener that was a mini-replica of the fridge handle.

Oh, try being a middle-school kid in the 70's wearing Toughskin jeans....when all your popular friends were wearing Jordache.
