My top is about 20 mph faster than your Mom's. My usual, only about 15.

I would spend the summers with My PaPa down in MS on the homestead/farm
Just Papa and me

Time to go get something at the 'store' was 20 miles one way on a dirt road
Papa would let me drive the big ole Hudson (I was 10)
I would slowly increase the speed from idle up trying for 20mph
Once I got to 15mph Papa would go ''whoop, whoop, ease her up boy'
10mph was tops

Going to the 'store' was an all day affair....drive to/ visiting with store owners (cousins) & others, then drive back home
Leave at 8am and back before dark
Papa didn't drive in the dark
