Starter log for fires

As much as I have tried, I am just not good at getting a campfire going with real wood. I’ve tried dozens of times and just don’t have the knack. So lately I have been using starter logs and I find it works great and is easy. Does anybody else do this? Am I wrong for doing this lol. I walk around other campsites and have yet to find anybody who uses them instead of real firewood. Just curious

If you want the same effect without using a whole log you could try these......

https://smile.amazon.com/Duraflame-F...897005&sr=8-18

They are the same material and company that makes the logs, just in smaller squares to help light a real wood fire.

A 12 pack is $12 and these are much smaller to deal with and store vs. 12 full size logs.

Hope this helps!

There are no "right" answers, just what works for you. I've used many different things to get the campfire going, from starter logs to quilt fabric scraps.

For me, time can be a factor sometimes. If we are just setting up, and I wish to cook over the fire. I figure out a way to get it going.

I don't think anyone will judge you if they walk past your campsite and see a starter log, usually folks just want to stop by and say hello.

Supposed to be a low stress environment.

I usually use my propane torch to light fires.

We made some that work great. Take a very small paper cup, put paper from your paper shredder and then put candle wax over the paper. Just enough wax to wet the paper and let dry. Place under wood and light.

If your firewood is split and seasoned, you can light it very easily. If you have to use a starter log, you probably have poor firewood. We've turned to fat wood as a starter. One small stick and she's off and running! It's available through Amazon.

Drier lint works as well using the same paper cups and wax.

What ever works.

For years I had my own wood that was very dry. One section of news paper and it started with a few small branches.

Now:
I normally use Girl Scout water (charcoal lighter fluid)

I also like the enviro-logs starters from lows 24 for $9

We always carried a supply of 2x cutoffs and split it up for kindling. Used a propane torch to get it going. Then we got lazy and impatient and bought one of these. Starts immediately and shuts down immediately. Cool down takes about 10-15 minutes.

Go to a building supply and buy a 6 foot long cedar fence board. Cut it into 6" or so lengths and then split the boards into 4 to 6 pieces. Take a couple of the pieces and shave wood along the edge into whiskers. Light the whiskers and put on several more pieces and this will start your fire. Cedar burn easily and is cheaper than fore starters.

Another thing to use id Fritos as a fire starter. You can also collect drier lint, put into cardboard egg cartons and pour melted wax over the lint. Break or cut into cubes and use these to light a fire.

We have used fat wood from Lowes and Weber paraffin charcoal starters. Some times both if the wood is green or wet

Been doing that for years, Paraffin wax, drier lint, eggshell cups. They'll burn 10-15 minutes. I get a dozen from a stick of wax. Light weight, zip lock bag em into the cupboard they go. I also keep some in the ATV as a "just in case" If I have to spend a night out.
