I’ve done it on a bob cat tire. Harmful, Dangerous could be if not careful and scary.

I've not tried it but have seen it done. It seems there are ways to do this that are less likely to cause havoc to you or the surrounding stuff!

A few years back I decided to change my own 245/70R19.5 tires on my motorhome. I was worried that I couldn't get the bead to set so I order one of these: Bead Blaster.

Ironically, all 6 of the motorhome tires inflated without any need for bead seating! However, I decided to mount tires on my Jeep, ATV trailer and utility trailer. Non of those tires self beaded but the BEAD BLASTER set the bead on all of the them the first try.

I have a garden tractor. I run the rear tire pressure pretty low occasionally it will get pulling hard enough to spin the wheel in the tire and let all the air out. No problem, I go to the shop, inflate the Bead Blaster got back to where the tractor sits with a flat, give it a blast...no more flat!

Works good!

Not for everyone...but good for me!

My weed burner works well since it has about a three foot arm. Run a bit of propane into the tire, hit the striker and poof. Did this on lawn tractor tires a couple of times.

I watched my fil do this on truck tires.

I had a buddy drive Into a camp spot next to me last Summer with a flat outside dual. It was off the bead, so I gave it the old starting fluid blast to seat it. Then I aired it up to 80 psi and off he went to a tire shop for 6 new tires. He was impressed that I could air it up that easy.

Did it for the first time on my tractor tires, use common sense and it's pretty cool.

Good deal! I was wondering about alternative fuels for this trick.

MAF sensor cleaner works also. Try a little bit to start, then work up to what is enough.

Just be sure there's no flames left after the first try before the second shot!

Starting fluid tire inflation trick

When I was a truck driver roadside svc used these along with lighter fluid etc. it was common back then. Never seen the “strap” in about 30 roadside calls I made over the years . Big bang ! Quick , Fun to watch , have no idea about safety. That and a square shovel to lift and mount the tire and rim on the hub. But then I’ve done and seen lots of “stupid” stuff that worked fine , just lucky maybe.

We didn't have many spray cans on the farm when I grew up, but the ones we had were strictly off limits. But a little gasoline in the weed sprayer sure was exciting.

I didn't learn the starting fluid trick until I started work in a truck shop.

“Rapid inflation” literally tears bead tension cables by using unmanaged, unmeasured and unmitigated energy.

You buy quality tires with quality bead tension just to watch an installer cram the tire to the seat not with skilled coercion but with force. And for what? His convenience?

I’d fire any shop that does this (including those that use bead blasters) to a tire I plan on using much less a brand new one.

They’re putting you and your assets at risk far more than themselves. A compromised bead with torn/frayed bead retention cables is a pussycat just lying on the floor. Get it up to speed, under load and pulling a toad and….

How do you recommend the tire shop get the tire to seal to the rim, they all use some form of bead blaster, even if a pipe with lots of holes. I have used the starting fluid many times, the key is the amount of fluid you use, the "blast" is less loud than the sound made when a tire pops over the ridge on the rim and seats during inflation. Have your ever watched the contortions that the beads go through when installed on the rim using the tire machine, far more stress on the wire than the small explosive force created by seating with either.

I have done it once in the back woods in the NJ Pine Barron’s. With my Jeep I would run 5psi in my off road tires and on one trip I broke the bead. I have a CO2 tank in the Jeep to air up but the strap would not set the bead so I used starter fluid. Bang back on the trail. Click image for larger version

I now have bead locks so I don’t have that problem.
