We got a govt check in the mail for $1400.00 last week and wondered what it was. Then we got a statement from the IRS saying the DW had made a mistake on our Income Tax last year and it was a refund. At first she wanted to argue with them, but I said no. Just be quiet. 😁
So due to Covid we're not traveling this Winter and instead will use the money to fix up the coach. Upgrade some electronics and so on. 🚍
We'll also fix up our boat a bit and do some fishing trips this Summer.👍

Economics and politics of inflation

You are spending your Stimulus Money. So, it is having the desired effect. Our grand children will pay it back. But it may not be all that onerous.

Back in the late 60's and 70's the U.S. was faced with high government debt. Lots of rich people and foreigners owned the debt. Inflation mysteriously started to increase. It went faster and faster. Eventually it reached double digit levels.

The national debt just evaporated. Actually it was still there, but a dollar was worth less than 1/10 of what it was before. Unseen by most people, it was a huge tax on those who owned debt. People who owned expensive RV, Boats, real estate, and art did not pay the "tax". They reaped the benefit.

The seed money for my comfortable retirement came from owing real estate debt then. Owning expensive RV's, real estate, and stocks when inflation starts again can prove profitable.

The Federal Reserve System seems to be magical. It can make national debt disappear.

I wish you good luck and happy trails ahead!

Yes, the money will be helpful, but I too think about the burden we will be putting on our kids and grandkids!

I wondered this after the first check and second check that trump sent us. We put them in the savings for that long trip after covid clears or maybe for the kids to inherit. Now congress might send me a third check.

The big increase in cost of goods in the early 70's was from rapid oil price increase caused by the oil embargo. Remember the price freeze Nixon did. They froze wages and the price of goods so the manufactures reduced the size for the same price. The box of ceral keep getting smaller, but the price did not change.

My employer in the mid 70's had to justify why they gave me a pay increase to the federal goverment. They would keep using that I was becoming more skilled. The big wage increase was in the 80's when interest rates went through the roof, by 84, 13+% mortgage rates. Social Security taxes went through the roof, wages in the 80's doubled. The increase in SS tax revenue funded the great expansion of DOD spending, which became a huge goverment spending program to restart the economy.

Ain't got it in my hand so for now it does NOT exist

Ain't spending it until it is in my hand

Boxes of cereal, coffee, candy bars, salsa bottles etc etc etc are still getting smaller and pricing is slowly increasing
Then marketing comes out with 'New, Improved, Bonus, Larger Size etc etc etc' and price goes up
