I saw one in Jacksonville several years ago. Traffic was backed up and then at a certain point you could see that three lanes merged into two. At that point was an electric lighted sign that said "Road widening project underway".

I don't have a photo but in the mid 1980s I was driving through rural Montana and saw signs (not home made, looked like state DOT signs) that read:
SLOW DOWN
DRIVE LIKE
YOUR KIDS
LIVE HERE

For those that are from other areas and are not familiar with the local illegal "immigration" problem, the sign in the photo above is in the center divider of the california coast highway near san onofre state beach. I've driven by it many times.
In that area the ocean is 1000 to 2000 feet from the highway, and mexican people smugglers (called coyotes) would run boats full of people up the coast from mexico and dump the people on the beach. Then another coyote would pick them up in a vehicle and take them north to another dropoff point. They have it down to a science.

I've driven that road in my car, several years ago. Nice drive!

A few miles away is a "Deaf Child" sign. Now, I won't argue that it's a bad sign, or a stupid sign, but if there is still a deaf child anywhere near that sign, it's because there have been a few of them...since it's been in the same spot for over forty years!

This one makes you think. are you supposed to ask other hikers how much they weigh?

Not sure if the pic is clear enough, but this sign worried me for a while;
No Trucks over 1 ton....
ALL the trucks and even the cars are over 1 ton!!!
Turns out what they were trying to say, was no commercial trucks.

When I see a lot of these signs I shake my head. One that get's me is that "bridges freeze before the roadway". I look at it as, do we need the signs, shouldn't we let natural selection take over?

The problem with that logic is they could wipe out others that know bridges freeze first.
