We used to live in the DFW area, and were surprised at how few "nice" campgrounds there actually are in the entire area. On the south side of the area is Cedar Creek state park, on the northwest side is a great park in Grapevine (The Vineyards), and just north of Dallas near Denton are a few good parks. Hopefully others will chime in with places to stay on the east and west ends of the area. Best to set up camp in one of those parks, and drive to south Dallas to the fairgrounds. Be careful in south Dallas, we were robbed by a guy with a knife the last time we attended the fair. However, nothing like a Fletcher's corny dog fresh out of the fat fryer! Mmmmm, corny dogs. Big Tex had his clothes burned off then, too. I sure hope they got him all dressed up again! "Welcome.....to.....the.....State..Fair........of. ....Texas"!

The state park campground on the south side of Dallas would be Cedar Hill State park on the East side of Joe Pool Lake. It is about a 25 minute drive to Fair Park. They close the gate at 10:00 pm though. I know boat owners have a code to get in after 10 pm. There should be a way for campers to get in as well.

There is also a campground run by the city of Grand Prairie. It is on the west side of Joe Pool. It is a little further away from Fair park. I have never been in this campground but I have heard good things about it. It is probably 30 to 35 minutes to Fair Park.

You can probably do a Google search on Joe Pool camping and more info.

Texas State Fair Park is safe, but the area around it is not.

Plantation Place RV Park is the closest park to the fairgrounds. It is 14 miles.

I've not stayed there, but friends have and said it was good.
