That was nice of Walmart
I always use self-checkout when I shop at Walmart. Two days ago I accidentally left a package of Pepperidge Farm cookies at the bagging area after they had been duly paid for. I discovered my mistake after I got home. Even though the cookies cost $4.00, I decided it wasn't worth driving back to the store; I figured someone had already snatched them by now.
I returned to the store today for more shopping and told the employee in the self-checkout area of my loss. Without hesitation, she told me to pick up another package and not to ring it up.
I thanked her and let her know I'm on a fixed income, and every dollar matters..
I guess it also matters that I'm a frequent customer there, and many employees know me.

Wow, that is awesome!!
It is customer service like that which makes that store an easy choice for your shopping.
I, also, have a Walmart self checkout positive story. I was picking up supplies for a very sick friend and one of the cold medicines had a limit (it wasn't marked at the shelf and I was getting two).
When I tried to check out, it wouldn't let me. The employee came over and told me why. I completely understood and asked what was the best way for me to put it back on the shelf.
He told me not to worry, finish my order, then start a new one for the other bottle of cold medicine.
I found that to be very nice of him and I have a very positive view of that Walmart and I go there, even though it is out of my way, to shop.

Ive shopped at Walmarts for many years, and have always found their employees to be friendly and helpful.
I also appreciate their generally lower prices on many food items. For example, their products in the frozen foods aisles are a good deal lower than at another local market I also frequent.
Unfortunately prices at Walmart are following the trend of other markets . However, their prices still come out lower in the end.

Yes foodstuff prices are rising in lockstep with the demand for higher wages. It always has and always will under our capitalistic society.
I remember when a candy bar was 5 cents, and I made $35/40-hr week.
I don't know how young families with children are making it.
Most every time we go to WalMart the bill is over $400 for 2 weeks of food.
To top this off, small farmers are receiving less money today for what they grow than they did 5 years ago

Self Checkouts should provide 'discounts'........I'm doing the work
Good customer service costs them nothing but goes a long way with the customers
Live in a small town and most places have good customer service.
Most not all......those that have NO competition ---some have lousy customer service which is reflective of the employees they have

Walmart customer service.
I have left one or two items at Walmart after paying. They return the items to the front office and log them in. Friends of ours had their MotorHome breakdown and were able to coast into a Walmart. This store had a no overnight parking sign. They spoke with the manager and he said it was okay. They went inside and purchased groceries. It was the weekend and they couldn't get towed to a service center for a few days. This was in Florida.

Sometimes I get the impression that Walmart employees don't care one way or the other if you pay for something or not. But, on the other hand Sam's Club examines every piece in the buggy to compare to your receipt.

I've noticed that the gal near the doors at Walmart checks some customer's items, but never mine. I guess I have that "innocent look".
EDIT: Giving it more thought, I think they're checking those customers with obvious big ticket items in their carts ( TV's, Pc's, etc.).

That would indicate that food prices are rising faster than wages.
How does that happen if the rise in food prices is caused by rising wages?
You seem to be of the mindset that that we need millions of people trying to live off of low wages so the rest of us can have reasonable prices for goods and services.

It's about management and employees, not the name on the store sign. For cheap and really quick food sometimes we like to pop into Taco Bell. There are three in our normal driving area. One we refuse to go into. I figure at some point management and employees will be flushed out as fast food places have pretty high turnover. But for the foreseeable future, nope.
There's a local Dollar Tree on our sh%t list for basically the same reason. Employees very obviously do not care at all and it's a disaster. (Two across town are neat as pins.) But wife wanted a quick something and had me stop there anyway. She went in and very shortly came right back out saying: "Never mind. It can wait until I get by one of the other stores." Still on the list.
I don't always find the Wal-Mart employees great at their jobs but I don't think I've run into any over the years that didn't at least try to be nice and helpful. And I've run into a few real winners working there that I wanted to hire away they were so on their game. Some folks just shine no matter where they are.

I shop Walmart for the price and convenience and I find their employees to be generally very customer friendly.
However, I am worried that continuing to do so is bad for our economy as a whole. Recent studies have concluded that Walmart is so big and powerful that it has now a detrimental effect on grocery prices. Walmart's efforts to get the lowest price from suppliers is forcing suppliers to "make up" the difference by raising prices charged to other stores and wholesalers. Economists call it the Waterbed Effect when a dominant market buyer like Walmart forces its suppliers to accept less in payment because the sale is so large. To stay in business the suppliers then mark up the difference to all their other buyers, making it impossible for anyone to meet Walmart's price and stay in business. There has been considerable research on the subject recently and Walmart is not the only company engaging in the practice. But they seem to be the most effective. By holding down supplier prices Walmart is effectively controlling the market, eliminating competition, and actually increasing inflation in the general economy.

Yes, that's nice to hear. Thank-you for sharing.
How about the "other" direction though? When you pay cash and you get change, if you received too much change back, do you give it back to the cashier?
It works both ways you know.

YES I do...cause a short till is made up at end of shift by the employee.
AS for Walmart running Grocery stores out of business
Not with the quality of their produce!!
Goes bad within the week.........
Walmart is OK for some items but Groceries......go to the grocery store for that commodity.
Our small town has ONE grocery store......slightly higher prices then town 18 miles away (GREAT Bakery!!)
Town 18 miles away has 3 grocery stores so prices are bit lower
Employees.......restaurants, grocery stores, retail, fast food
HIT or MISS and 'Hiring' Signs on the doors
