I am a former businessman and a current teacher. Most of the issues in the school systems deal with a couple of barriers. 1. Most kids spend too much time in front of their TV's and video games and no time studing. 2. No parent supervision on studies (work 2 jobs or only 1 parent at home). 3. State testing, must teach to the test to achieve ratios or you may get fired. Wasn't that way in the 60's or 70's. 4. Behavior in schools is real bad. Go visit your child in school and watch from afar how some behave. I spend a great deal of my time trying to control the atmosphere and get the lessons taught.
Now I admit that we can all do more to help education, but I as a teacher can't do it alone. Believe me its not for the money.

It's not just the kids who are stupid! Just look at the ridiculous political ads they run on TV. Then again how about the recent budget fight in congress! Makes you wonder how this country will ever survive!

The curious (and sad) thing is that it is true on most forums frequented by people from the U.S. Most of the international English speaking forums I'm on tend to have excellent spelling, especially the U.K. based ones. Even sadder is the people who do misspell words frequently do not understand (or just don't care) how poor spelling, etc. destroys their credibility.

Last month I read where some school districts decided to stop teaching cursive altogether, saying texting and the internet makes it obsolete. A side note, my real-time spelling add-on does not recognize "texting" as a legitimate word.
The "hand them the correct change" plus dollars involved trick, is fun when you have the time to watch the reaction.
I remember back in the 80's, when computerized cash registers just hit the retail stores, a salesman at Sears was having a particularly difficult time operating this new technological marvel. My oldest daughter piped up "my daddy says a computer is no smarter than the person operating it". Out of the mouths of babes_.

I am one person who is glad that I can understand, interpet and accept bad spelling. Never in my life has bad spelling cost me a dime or cost others a dime if I made a mistake.

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for
authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place
of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their
households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They
contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties
at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers."
Attributed to SOCRATES by Plato ...
Seems nothing ever really changes eh ???

I wonder if they teach them to sign their name in cursive. I don't think you can print your name on a car loan.

Can't spell is one thing but when they cannot even make change when the register tells them what to give back now that's something else. Of course sometimes it's in my favor.

We all know our ritin and ritmatic but can you make addition and subtracting faster than a kid at the check-out. Oh well we all have to start somewhere just be glad that they have enough ambition to get a job and work. The problem is they get everything gave to them as kids and as adults they think that that's the way it is.
