VA I95 massive VA storm incident.

Have we as a society gotten so entitled that people stuck in a blizzard condition delay think that VDOT and NASA have enough helicopters with giant magnets to rescue them? They were furious that VDOT didn't call them back. I guess not, they were out in it trying to clear the mess. They even blasted the Gov elect who had nothing to do with it. He hasn't taken office yet.
My Daddy taught me to pay attention to the weather and if it looked shaky fill your gas tanks, and put some blankets and snacks in the car if you must travel.
Otherwise stay the heck home or delay travel. That 14 plus inches of snow didn't all fall at once. It fell for hours.

LOL - the guy they keep replaying on the news saying he's a taxpayer and VDOT should answer the phone gives me a chuckle each time I see it. I wonder what he thought the call center was going to do to get him out of his stuck car in the middle of hundreds of other stuck cars.

VDOT did drop the ball on this one. They had plenty of warning and should have closed the road as other states did. That might have stopped the trucks, but it wouldn't have stopped the people who thought they could make it through heavy wet snow in their rear wheel drive imports with street tires. They would have just shifted to the 1 and had the same problem.

Close the road??? We pay the government to keep roads open, not to close them.

Ultimately itís the fault of the drivers for a) not checking the forecast , and/or b) ignoring the forecast

Do you pay? How much? Your entitled? Why has the gas tax not been raised in 30 years?

You get what you pay for.

This was southern VA, they don't have gates for road closures like out west. Only way to close 95 is to put Police at each entrance. Not a great use of resources when a major storm is occurring.

When i see a major winter storm warning issued, we stay off the roads.

Here's an interesting read on how much snow Richmond VA gets on a yearly basis. The upshot is, not much, but they do get walloped once in a while. They've only received over 10 inches of snow 7 times in the last 107 or 108 years. Is it any wonder that 14 inches caused a big traffic jam? https://www.currentresults.com/Yearl...d-snowfall.php

Some people want to immediately be saved from every possible catastrophe, but they don’t want their taxes to go up to pay for it. There is no such thing as free catastrophe relief.

Completely agree with you to stay off the roads! In your area you should see the candy cane colored gates at all the ramps that are there to direct traffic when a hurricane is on the way. I know I do when I come down there for a visit. The gates on 95 aren't as consistent (or pretty) but we do have them and there are clearly marked snow emergency and hurricane evacuation routes. Where there aren't gates, VDOT uses Type III barricades to close ramps, not officers. This particular blockage on 95 went from north of Richmond (40 or 50 miles, depending on the source) all the way up into Prince William County (where we live!). Knowing Virginia drivers, we stay well clear of the 95 when the weather is good and avoid it like the plague if it so much as drizzles. I can't fathom someone willingly getting onto the 95 when it's snowing.

It's the new me,me,me, take care of me generation, get used to it.

Maybe because I am a pilot, I pay pretty close attention to the weather around me and what is expected
