My father was shot down by U-Boats. He was the radar operator.

Growing I heard lots of sea stories of the humorous kind but I knew better than to ask about the dark side. He was not happy with my choice of going into subs and nuclear power.

I was reading a book about the capture of U-505. German submariners were told that radar was too heavy for airplanes. I asked about this. The author of the book was my father's commanding officer in Iceland.

Apparently, the Germans figured out that slow patrol planes did not just come out of the overcast and were waiting.

For this reason my favorite is Operation Petticoat. Think of it as a documentary.

Which Submarine Movie?

Both are very good movies. Das Boot is an excellent film (slightly different than just movie). As far as movies go, I like "Up Periscope" with James Garner, "The Enemy Below" with Robert Mitchum, and "Destination Toyko" with Cary Grant. Also a nod to "Run Silent, Run Deep" with Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster.

My all-time favorite is Crimson Tide, but then I was a boomer sailor. Next is Hunt for Red October. Then The Fifth Missile. Also like U-571 a lot, as well as Gray Lady Down.

Das Boot in German with English subtitles. The dubbed version is terrible!
