Neither scenario has worked out well in the movies. LOL

Hey, I have it! They're here to collect cats and dogs as pets! Maybe some cute bunnies and other critters, too. They don't want us to catch on because they assume we might get angry over the loss of some fur pals.
They thought about taking a few humans as pets, but decided we are too ugly and too difficult to spaceship-train.

I'm sure there are civilizations millions of light years away asking the same question.

I remember a TED talk where someone went through a calculation of probabilities. I don't recall it all but he started with an estimate of the number of habitable planets which of course is a mind blowing huge number. Then he came up with the probabilities of all the steps that needed to happen like DNA or whatever forming randomly etc. When you start multiplying the extremely large numbers with some extremely small probabilities you can quickly get down to some quite small numbers.
Of course it's all guesswork to a degree and I think I read some rebuttals so ... who knows.
I suspect primitive life, bacteria etc, might be quite common but intelligent life very rare.

Why do we think there's intelligent life here on Earth ?
Our past History , our current History and what we've done to our planet speaks volumes about lack of intelligence here on Earth.
We will be lucky to survive as a species long enough to develop the technology to seriously explore the vastness of Space .
I'm old enough to remember the development of TV's , cell phones , computers and all the electronic devices we currently couldn't live without . Yet there was a time when people petitioned to have the US Patent Office closed because everything that could be invented had been done .
What I know is we don't have a clue what's out there , so I'm willing to accept anything is possible , including UFO's , other dimensions , things co-existing with us that are outside our visible sight constraints , things existing at different frequencies and the possibility of technologies that are 1000's of years a head of us .
We need to open our minds to all possibilities .

The term "intelligent life" is generally used to mean a life form that is self-conscious and capable of transforming its environment to suit its needs. Humans are certainly that, and hence an intelligent life form. You may not like what people have done here on planet Earth, but to suggest that we are not an intelligent life form because of that is not science, it is a largely political opinion.
Humans are aggressive species, but then I would think that any self-conscious species that succeeds to primacy against other predators on their planet is, by necessity, an aggressive species and so I suspect that if we come across other intelligent life forms we will not be pleased with the results.
As for intelligent life existing on other planets, I would not be surprised if they exist but I would also not be surprised if they don't exist. And I would not be surprised if we could not determine if they even exist because I am not clear how we can determine if other creates are self-aware. Are dolphins self-aware? Or whales? How would we know.

I think the more fundamental question is, if there is advanced life out there somewhere why would they go to all of the trouble to come here, assuming that interstellar travel is possible or practical. Even assuming technology advanced beyond our imagination interstellar travel to come here is likely the equivalent to us traveling to the middle of Antarctica to study a specific snowflake.

I do believe that being exist in the universe that are capable of traveling to this planet and have done so. I also believe that as they did a fly by they observed no intelligent life and just moved on. Chuck

Personally , I'll stick with the Merriam-Webster definition of " Intelligent Life" , " being's that can learn and understand things" .
Nothing regarding self-conscious or self awareness , or modifying their environment .
I apologize if you misread it as a political statement .
I meant it from a humanitarian perspective .
Regarding animals having self awareness . The Scientific Community has done research in this field for decades . You might be surprised at their results .

I have always thought that the Prime Directive was a big copout.
The idea is that if aliens came to Earth during World War II and found the Nazi concentration camps they were not supposed to do anything. Just let them continue killing all of those confined. Don't pay any attention to the gas chambers. Just go on their merry way.
If they came across people being burned alive in the Middle Ages they are just supposed to watch and let the mobs do their work.
And so on ...
