Back when dinosaurs ruled the earth, we in Los Angeles had a number of AM stations to choose from. They included:
KHJ "Boss Radio"
KRLA
KDAY
Then, FM became popular with underground or progressive rock with:
KMET
KLOS (still with us)
KRTH (oldies)
KPPC (later became KROQ)

Are you asking the coming of age radio stations? or the most enjoyable radio? Or the best drive time radio?
My initial choice was WLS to be with the cool kids. the most enjoyable was talk radio, promoted some elements of thinking. Best late night drive radio had to be Art Bell hands down... A few times there were Sat afternoon replays of dreamland, Art's 3-5 hr interview on some interesting topics...

WLS out of Chicago. I had my Dad's work car, a 1948 Chev Fleetline with a really long, tall antenna hooked to the vacuum tube radio. And push buttons too!! Only car around that consistently got WLS

West Coast, SF Bay area: KSFO (late at night for Al 'Jazzbo' Collins), KLIV (top 40, ugh) then the world opened up-FM! KLGS (later KTAO), any (and every) local college station, and KKUP, alistener-supported station in a little town (Cupertino) pre- silicon valley. KSAN. In the late 70s, it was KFAT (later KPIG). Like your school teachers, you never forget....

For me it was WABC out of New York. Cousin Bruce and Dan Ingram were my go to guys and I was actually a card carrying member of their clubs. Boy that was a while ago.

The DJ's that I remember so well were George Lorenz aka The Hound. He was on WKBW and he was the guy that Wolfman Jack patterned himself after. Others were Dick Biondi, Art Roberts, and Tom Shannon who were all on WKBW with Shannon being the guy I listened to in college on CKLW.

Yup, "93 KHJ". There was Charlie Tuna, The Real Don Steele and others I can't recall their names. Oh, and Machine Gun Kelly.

When I was stationed in Phoenix we used to listen to Wolfman and I remembered it as XERB also. I wasn't sure if my memory was wrong so thanks for that reassurance!
That station was supposed to be at 50,000 watts but had been picked up all over the world. It had been rumored to be at around 150,000 watts at times.

KAKC and KELI.
Who knows where those two stations originated? It was my home town when I was young and stupid!

I heard that XERB broadcast in Tijuana, Mexico and the FCC couldn't lay a finger on them.

Same here. Wasn't one of the disc jockeys on WLS Dick Biondi.
