Why is pepperoni always the standard pizza topping?

Like the title says, why is pepperoni always the "go to" pizza topping? Who decided this and when?
I personally don't care for it all that much. I mean, it's ok but I would rather have hamburger or sausage as a base meat topping.
I just can't help but notice that every pizza commercial on TV always shows a pepperoni topped pizza. My wife and kids think I'm crazy but it really bugs me for some reason.

Talk to the marketing division. Theyíll show you numbers. Money drives that decision.

I don't care for it either but will eat it if that's what's available. Prefer Hawaiian or sausage.

I always preferred pepperoni and pineapple over the traditional Hawaiian.

Meatball or sausage are not catchy words, pepperoni is.

It's a plot by the United Pepperoni League or the mafia, I'm not sure which.

Simple, it's easily the most iconic visually recognizable pizza.

...and has the side benefit of being the cheapest to produce, other than plain cheese, while also having the the benefit of "appearing" to offer a more substantial pizza.

Is a Pepperoni a plant or an animal? I don't care for it either.

It covers 3 of the major food groups, meat, salt and grease.

Some finer establishments offer a Cup & Char pepperoni pizza that could be a game changer.

Untimely though, itís the crust that makes a pizza.

Some outfit just started offering a bowl of pizza toppings sans any crust.

Do commercials really drive what you buy for pizza?

We make our own....haven't bought a pizza in years so don't really care what they promote via commercials.

Hot sausage, bell peppers, onions, black olives, 3 cheeses

Becaaaaauuuussse . . . its good? :^)

Can't tell you the last time our refrigerator didn't have a package of pepperoni in it for doctoring up frozen pizza.

Seems to be a favorite with kids too.
