I spend a lot of time near Phoenix in the Nov to April months, the good times, so I only know what the full time residents tell me. For me not good. It's a different strokes for different folks type thing as everyone is different. You may be OK with the temps and maybe not. It would be something that you either get acustomed to or you don't. Be carefull.

Average temp in Pheonix now is 87 high. It is supposed to break 100 Sunday and Monday.

and there are no summer 'lows' in the 70's !
some weeks we are lucky to see mid 80's for LOWs.

It's all in what you get used to...

Snowbirds

I think the snowbirds have it figured out. Was in Las Vegas in August watched someone trying to walk their dog around noon...I knew then that I could never live in that environment. Global warming has moderated our winters...this winter we had one snowfall greater than a few inches. March reached temps in the 50's. Will keep MN as our base and roam in the RV. Still working so not a snowbird yet.

May 30th:
Just moved to Phoenix. Now this is a city that knows how to
live!! Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. What a place! I. watched the sunset from a park lying on a blanket. It was beautiful.
I've finally found my home. I love it here.
June 14th:
Really heating up. Got to 100 today. Not a problem. Live in an
air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car. What a pleasure to see the sun everyday like this. I'm turning into a sun worshiper.
June 30th:
Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today. Lots of cactus and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing lawn for me.
Another scorcher today, but I love it here.
July 10th:
The temperature hasn't been below 100 all week. How do people get used to this kind of heat? At least it's kind of windy though. But getting used to the heat and humidity is taking longer that I expected.
July 15th:
Fell asleep by the pool. (Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my
body). Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do. I learned my lesson though. Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this.
July 20th:
I missed Morgan (our cat) sneaking into the car when I left this morning. By the time I got to the hot car for lunch, Morgan had died and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag and stank up the $2,000 leather upholstery. I told the kids that she ran away. The car now smells like Kibbles and shits. I learned my lesson though. No more pets in this heat.
July 25th:
The wind sucks. It feels like a giant freaking blow dryer!! And
it's hot as hell. The home air-conditioner is not working and the AC repairman charged $200 just to drive by and tell me he needed to order parts.
July 30th:
Been sleeping outside by the pool for 3 nights now. $1,500 in
damn house payments and we can't even go inside. Why did I ever come here?
Aug. 4th:
It's 115 degrees. Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today.
It cost $500 and gets the temperature down to 85. Stupid repairman. I hate this stupid city.
Aug. 8th:
If another wise ass asks, "Hot enough for you today?" I'm going to strangle him. Damn heat. By the time I get to work the radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like baked cat!!
Aug. 9th:
Tried to run some errands after work. Wore shorts, and sat on
the black leather seats in the ol' car. I thought my ass was on fire. I lost 2 layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and ass.
Now my car smells like burnt hair, fried ass, and baked cat.
Aug. 10th:
The weather report might as well be a damn recording. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. It's been too hot to do **** for 2 damn months and the weatherman says it might really warm up next week.
Doesn't it ever rain in this damn desert? Water rationing now, so my $1700 worth of cactus just dried up and blew into the damn pool. Even the cactus can't live in this damn heat.
Aug. 14th:
Welcome to HELL!!! Temperature got to 115 today. Forgot to crack the window and blew the damn windshield out of the car. The installer came to fix it and said, "Hot enough for you today?" My wife had to spend the $1500 house payment to bail me out of jail.
Freaking Phoenix. What kind of a sick demented idiot would want to live here?

Yeah, I say go for it!

PHX is not for the light hearted. Good luck with finding a house in Scottsdale that will have room for a RV area. Some of the HOA's are brutal. A lot of the streets are very narrow too. So saying that, if you have your mind set on PHX, be very careful with the heat. It kills there.
Saying that, have you looked at Prescott? Elevation is 4500' and stays (for the most part) under 100'F. On the other side, it snows there but not often. And when it does, it doesn't stick. Home pricing is much better and you can get land that will entertain a RV (or garage too). It doesn't take but 45 to 1 hr to get to Scottsdale (depending on traffic). Speaking of traffic, and you will laugh at this, is almost as bad as So CA. Big difference is again, when it's over 100+'F, you better have a car that has a great cooling and AC and can run in a stand still.
I currently live in Sedona. It's very nice but is a little more expensive that I care to endure (not like Scottsdale though). I think we will be moving to Prescott after our lease is up here in Sedona. Good luck in your transition to AZ. Make sure you tell CA DMV or they will continue to charge you for your tags. Don't ask me how I know...... Oh and welcome to AZ.

Welcome to Sedona. I can understand your dislike of the RE prices here. We moved here last year and love it (except for the RE prices). Looked at Prescott but liked it here better. Hi neighbor.

Hi to you too!!! We really love Sedona. Even the tourist don't bother us. We live in the Village so dealing with downtown is no problem either. It's tough to find a rental property here though. Most is for seasonal renters. We like Prescott (not Prescott Valley) because of the cheaper rentals and you can park your RV for more than a day. We like to have it close while we load and check things out for the next trip. Can't really do that in Sedona. AND it stays fairly cool during the summer.... Well Sedona does too....
I can imagine trying to live in Scottsdale..... Thats why we left CA. Too many people and to warm in the summer..... Just saying....

Just did some research:
Spring Valley and Scottsdale are about the same elevation 1,000ft and 1,200ft
New river is at 2,000ft (1hr drive). This might have possibilities.

Dan
Take a look at Prescott area. About 90 miles from Scottsdale. One thing to consider is that you bought property to be near your daughter. Spent a lot of money and effort and then she up and moves three hours away. Now you are tasked with sellin the property. Now, I'm not saying you should be upset with her or her decisions, HOWEVER, since she is young and probably has her whole career/life ahead of her what are the chances you will buy a place near her and her family, settle in and then she up and moves again for a career change or whatnot?

My point is, move to a place YOU want to be. I get the wife wanting to be next to her daughter and current/future grandchildren but I would do it while having to live in 110*+ temps for 3-4 months a year. Especially when I can only drive two hours down the road and live in the mountains with a reasonable climate.

we looked at Prescott (larger with more amenities), Sedona (lovely), and ended up in payson (smaller, but you can be in Scottsdale or mesa in an hour). many people up here drive down to the valley daily for their jobs. all three of these places have cooler weather than phoenix.

How about being a sunbird? (Heading north during the summer). The winters here are wonderful, and I need some RV'ing time in the summer!

We've lived in Mesa for 18 years. I'm not an early riser, I got that out of my system when I was working. However, I don't mind sweating when there're bushes to trim in the yard. I can handle the heat for a while since everything is air conditioned anyway and we have ceiling fans in every room in the house except the bathrooms! Our highest bill last year was $286 for 2170 sq ft house.

What I like to do is get the motorhome ready so that I can leave right after the 4th of July madhouse. So, around the Monday or Tuesday after the 4th of July weekend, I head out. I love the high country just 110 miles from home where I can dry camp to my hearts content. Sometimes we'll head out to Oregon, or other points north. This year I plan to spend some time in New Mexico's high country.

My wife usually prefers to stay home and keep busy with her books, church activities, workouts, and other things. She loves her house and isn't fond of RV'ing, so the dog and I stay gone through most of July and August. We come home a few times to spend time with her and get the yard work done before heading out again. Sometimes she will come and spend time with us, other times not. She's happy, we're happy, life is good!
