1968 Fiber-Top Truck Camper
Manufactured by Lynnwood Fiberglass only 3 where built, one met it's demise flying off back of truck another one is still out there somewhere and this one almost ended up in the scrapper too
Story is original owner was going to destroy it and was tired of looking at it so neighbor got it for free, neighbor used it for few years and decided to sell it. Someone knew the neighbor bought it and never picked it up, though claimed had full intention to restore it but never moved it from where he bought it from. Years went on and the city of Edmonds WA decided that it had to go it was a eyesore, either sell it or scrap it and so it was posted for $500 which is where I picked it up. It came with clear title from 68 and I couldn't move it till it was in my name, so I transferred it. It's very thick and heavy fiberglass truck camper, not the thin like Bigfoot fiberglass campers or others. So if anyone knows of another one I will travel to meet them to see what they have done to it.
As for the progress and the progress of the rig it went on to make what is of today, all I can say is;
Buckle your seatbelt Dorothy 'cause Kansas is going bye-bye...

Now for the rig it went on, I couldn't just put it on a old beat up F450 I rolled down side of the mountain. Sure don't like seeing people weeble wobble with campers on the back of class 1, 2 maybe 3 trucks depending on suspension going around corners or any motion of the steering wheel, nope I went all the way.
Found a beverage truck class 7 rated with reliable DT466 engine for $750, good ole 1986 International S1900 5 on the stick with 2 speed rear axle which had blown transmission. Pulled the antique 5 speed Spicer and put a Eaton 6 speed in fully synchronized. More I did to it later but for now here what it was...

Crickets chirping over here
Time for some primer paint after few days of sanding and boy it is nasty colored primer. Inside view also of how wrecked it is. The sideways bed going from left to right has to go along with all appliances that aren't working. Going to strip this down to the shell and start it over.

Welp, here is some new pictures. Used marine boat paint since it's a fiberglass unit. Next is stripping the interior and spray foam insulation with closed cell after I increase the depth of the wall cavities. At 1 inch they are little shallow.

That is a really neat find! I can see it was built very well.
Nice project, you'll have a 2 of a kind for now, and you never know, one day have the only one that exists depending how the other one is cared for with time.
Nevertheless, two in the whole world is pretty cool. I'll be following your progress with interest, best luck!

Um it’s the only one in existence that I know of as I don’t know the fate of the 2nd one yet. Thanks

Here we go ripping the interior out for modification. Going to take the bed and make it go from side to side, to front to back. Also will increase the wall cavity with furring strips next, then have fun spray foam insulating.

Had to replace the wood stringers in the floor, after 52 years I think they are shot. Fiberglassed over them like they do in boats, plus it's how it came apart too. More to come in next post on adding furring strips with more on the floor too, figure tease some.

Time to install furring strips and finish the floor then on to spraying foam insulation closed cell. While I was at it I replaced all 4 corner tie down boards that the hooks screw into to secure the camper, they were rotted too. Also fiberglassed them for protection.

Moving forward, time to insulate this place.... I went with spray foam insulation Class A fire rated 1.75 lbs closed cell at same time didn't fill the cavities full to put down cellulose insulation. Reason for that is to break thermal bridging from outside temperatures and to absorb interior exterior sounds.

Man, that things going to be bad ass.
Great restoration project that will look way cool on that International.
BTW, those DT466s go forever. I'm envisioning shortening the frame, basement storage, wild paint job and some 22.5 polished Alcoa's. Go for it, your making great progress in short order. I'd love to find an old classic Chinook camper to fix up for a fishin rig. You know, so I don't mess up the wife's coach...
Please keep us posted on your progress. Love this...

Electra 225: Yeah it is like one, there will be a 3rd layer of insulation mainly for sound transmission of MLV 1lb mass loaded vinyl which will hold the loose cellulose into place on the ceiling and walls with the spray glue from 3M till I get the interior siding up.It has a STC of 26 dB, you won't hear the rain hit the fiberglass.
Alpine36: Sounds lovely would like to do something like that but the beverage truck is going to play temporary roll since there is some frame rot in the back and I want a deuce and half or 5 ton military truck later on. Welding and turning wrenches on diesel is my main trade so I know the DT466 all to well, the mechanical version is almost indestructible. Not going to shorten the frame cause I have (2) 100 gallon fuel cells going on back side of the axle for more fuel, might go up to 400 gallons.
As to everyone this project is further along than in the pictures, but I can load only so many at a time and do so much at a time. I live off grid 3 miles from nearest neighbor, 25 miles of rock road that I turn off of to 3 miles up clay ridge road that's 40 miles from any city and the mail only runs 3 days a week here.
