1978 Holiday Rambler brakes

Hello All

Just purchased a 78 holiday rambler imperial 5000

The brake pedal doesnt stay up where it should
Braking from where the pedal rest is like braking in a newer vehicle with no brake fluid
The guy I got it from was raising it with his foot to get it to the top of its motion
If I do this or reach down there with my hand and raise it
the brakes just about put me though the windshield
So, the brakes work if the pedal gets to the top of the motion

What is causing the pedal to malfunction?

I read somewhere that the 79 model had Ford brake system
Does the 78 have ford too?

Thanks in advance

My first guess would be the pedal return spring under the dash.

Pedal spring or look for a bellcrank or offset linkage between the pedal rod and power brake booster outside on the firewall..

Sometimes the pins freeze up.Click image for larger version

It might also be the master cylinder itself. It has a very strong spring in it that pushed the piston back to the starting position. That push would go through the booster, linkage and to the pedal to assist any spring that might be on the linkage or pedal.
If that master cylinder spring was damaged/weak there might not be enough force to assist in pushing the pedal all the way up.

You might also want to check the pivot point of that pedal to see if maybe it's sticking. Might just need a good cleaning and some lube.
Like others I was thinking it was more like a car where the pivot and linkage hung down from the dash. Yours appears to be exposed to whatever the wheels might kick up.

Wow, I like the old school pedal through the floor. What's underneath the floor? I imagine there is a return mechanism for that pedal underneath.

I'd love to see more pics of the rig!

I’ve had a 1953 Chevy pickup with the “through the floor” brake pedal. It did have an external return spring. I think I remember you saying that this rig has a Dodge engine. If so, the entire chassis could be from Dodge, and shopping for antique Dodge truck parts might help you find something like the correct spring.
