1984 Onan 4.0 BGE issues

Hello all,

This generator is not original to my 91 Winne. I installed this unit 5-6 years ago and for the most part it has done well. Lately I have had this issue where it runs like crap then stalls. I have posted a couple of videos to help with this issues.

Here is a video of it running normally.

This was about 10 minutes later.

Im showing the governor trying to recover when its trying to stall.

This issues also happened about a year ago and just went away on its own. I put around 5-10 hours a month on this genny.

Thanks for any input you can give.

As a 1984 unit, it was not built for the Cr*p that is today's motorfuel.

You can, if you have the skill, take the carburetor apart and clean it. If gaskets don't get damaged, just put it back together. It would be smart to have a kit for it in spares anyway. A little research will tell you what to get.

Or,

Drive the coach over to a local small engine shop and see if he can help. Onans are used in lots of other places too, and he may well have seen the issue.

I am definitely not an expert. But, it does sound like it is starving for fuel. Working sometimes suggests the blockage is movable. It may be disturbed by road or motor vibrations.

Fuel filters
Screens in fuel tank
Rubber fuel lines disintegrating
Dirt accumulation in tank, fuel lines, shut off valves
Rebuild carb with attention to float valve, jets, and passage ways

Try the carb cleaning trick that Seafoam recommends first. If that don't work you will need to take it apart.

Im back with an update. I mixed a 16oz can with 1 gal of gas and ran the generator off of that fill it almost ran out. It didnt run that great and smoked a bit, but once I got it back on regular gas, the smoke cleared up and ran really smooth.

Thank you all for your input! It looks like a win for Seafoam!
