I didn’t have to do much to the aluminum framing since I didn’t widen the body. Above the back wall I had a doubled rib that I was able to use to attach the wood framing to before I sheeted the wall. I used some aluminum brackets that I made out of angles I had left over from the areas I cut off in any place that needed to be attached/reattached using self tappers and bolts where necessary. It’s definitely solid!

As far as the metal for the roofing...it is hole free but I’m not sure what gauge it is. It’s pretty thick though. Why would you reconsider using it?

Just curious to know the progress on this rebuild... I also have a London Aire and a friend and I have been talking for two years about cutting the back off and adding a toy hauler... then I came across your rebuild of doing the same.

Progress!!

Lots has been done to date and I still have a lot left to do. I have gutted the interior, removed the body, reworked and repainted the frame, replaced the axels, replaced all of the plywood flooring, reinstalled the body after cutting off 9’, reframed the rear wall, replaced the metal on the roof, framed in 4 bunks and the bathroom, installed the new wall between the bedroom and the living area, moved 2 windows and the door, and reworked every cabinet in it. It’s been a long road but I am pleased with the progress (however slow it’s been) so far. I still have the electrical, plumbing, insulation, paneling, and then to put the finishing touches on the whole thing. It’s definitely been a project but I know once I’m done I’ll be able to carry 2 quads on the back deck and sleep 7-8 comfortably inside. I’ve tried to reuse a lot of what I took out while trading the items I know I won’t use with a salvage yard in Phoenix.

My suggestion to you is PLANNING!! And patience! Clean and reuse everything you can if you want to keep it original or plan to spend a lot to replace what you need to buy. Lol Most importantly is to have fun. You’re making something that will be yours and unlike anything else out there!

Sorry the last one is upside down. I’ll post a better picture tomorrow morning.

Yeah it’s just amazing coming across this project of yours after looking at the same camper for the last three years thinking of doing this to it.... great work! It’s nice to see someone to do it first... like I told my friend that owns the London Aire... we have blue prints now!😉

Have you seen the 40’ London Aire?

Wow that 40 footer is a monster! Two entrances also....I'd like to see more pics sometime. Lot of living space in that classic.
