1997 Chevy P30 Parking Brake Shoes

Hey Everyone,

I have a 1997 Bounder 34J on a Chevy Workhorse P30 frame. My driveline parking brake has never held very well, but I've just gotten used to it over the years.

It's real clear the last owner almost set the whole rv ablaze by burning up the parking brake. He cut the J71 cable to get it rolling again. I had Used Old Bear rebuild the J71 mechanism, replaced the cut cable, and adjusted the driveshaft parking brake shoes.

It improved the parking brake, but I think the shoes were just burned up and need replacing. I've had enough and want it to work the way it is supposed to...

I'm in New Mexico and am considering just pulling the shoes, taking them across the border into Mexico, and getting them re-lined there. Might get the drum turned too...

However, I really don't like my RV in pieces for days... so I would prefer to have a set of shoes, in hand, before disassembly.

The last time I tried to do this, the wrong shoes were delivered and I just put the old ones back in.

So... I have A/C Delco 3609-07645527 as the part number for the *DRIVESHAFT* parking brake shoes. Is this the right part number? Does anyone have any cross-reference numbers? Anyone else have a better solution?

Thanks,
Joe

I owned a '94 Bounder with a Freightliner chassis with a drive shaft brake system. In that setup, the TW-12 hydraulic valve went bad and burnt the drive shaft brake shoes and I had zero parking brake for a while. I just used a set of chocks to block the RV until I got down into Mexico where I had the shoes re-soled. I was never able to find a cross for the P/Ns. Cost all of $20 in Mexico. In the US, you can probably find a business that re-soles brake shoes in the industrial district where you live. Or NAPA or some other parts store might have exact replacement shoes as they may be (probably are) Bendix parts. Or a truck parts store. So...options!

I would explore other options before buying those AC Delco shoes.

In 2023 I replaced the shoes on my 93 P30 with Wagner WNA449R brake shoes with a friction coeffecient of FF. I had to use both of the shoes with the shorter lining otherwise I could not get the brake drum on.

Check with UltraRV. I don't know if they have any for that age of a rig.
