454 engine 5000 mile oil change analysis

1995 TBI engine. FWIW, I used Quaker State Ultimate Durability Synthetic. I also used the PF932 2 Qt oil filter.

I always appreciate getting an oil analysis back from Blackstone because of the little personalized note.

I like that part also, but I’m going to ignore their suggestion of 6000 miles and stick with the 5000 mile interval. The viscosity is at the index minimum and I see no point in pushing it. Since most of our trips average 10000 miles. I’m happy to only do 1 roadside oil change instead of two.

On my last change I pulled a sample (Blackstone lab) in my 1994 P-30 Southwind Storm 28ft 454 TBI w/4L80E after 4,000 miles using Valvoline VR-1 Racing conventional 10w-30. With a Molbil 1 Extended Performance filter The TBN was at 6.1 with no abnormalities.

I'm now using Valvoline full synthetic 10w-30 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter.

Comments from my report...

Thanks for the notes. Idling before collecting the sample didn't result in any fuel dilution coolant is present either, and the slightly thin viscosity isn't much to worry about. The majority of wear metals are in good shape relative to universal averages, which show typical wear for these big 454 engines after a similar interval of ~4,000 miles. Copper is high in comparison, but it might not be from brass/bronze wear. Copper can come from parts like an oil cooler, and it's also a common finding after repairs. The TBN is strong at 6.1

The copper on my report was 72. This is normal for the 454 BBC due to the large oil cooler size. The copper reading differs overtime with each report (up/down).
