77 Starcraft Starmaster 8 cable system question

Hello all,
Own a new-to-me 77 Starcraft Starmaster 8 and while replacing one of the lift cables, I noticed a bar attached to the yoke that looks odd. It looks like it is intended to have a teardrop shape inside the channel that houses the cables, but has come loose. When I raise the top, at about 2/3 of the way it gets harder to turn then makes a loud bang. After that it is easy to raise and goes up fine. I will attach a few photos in hopes someone can tell me what this is and if I need to do anything to fix it.
Thanks in advance for the help.
