I'm betting that you'll have the problem again unless you get that tank cleaned and sealed up. Surprised that you didn't do it once you discovered the source of your problem.

Get the tank to a shop that will restore it.

As for a DIY....

Tank cleaning is a chore. It usually involves several days and a 'cut to length chain' that you drop into the tank with some muriatic acid type solution and agitating the tank quite a bit. The chain rolling and sliding around will remove the scale.

But I do not recommend doing it yourself.
