Using your picture the starter will be on the right of the block. Get under the right side and look for where the engine and transmission join. Then look between the oil pan and exhaust manifold for the starter.

What kind of noise is it making? A click, a chattering sound?

With that old a RV, does it have original battery terminals or the $3 ones, with the 2 small bolts clamping the wire ?

If its the aftermarket ones, they corrode under the plate and don't connect. Try tightening the little bolts after moving the cable under it.

It is clicking when I turn the key. I crawled under the right side but didn't go that far down. So if I have time tomorrow I will check that location.

It looks like the original terminal that looks like it's hardwired to the connections but the one for the negative has a crack along it I'll take a photo of it when I can in the post.

No, not yet. Spent Christmas with my brother in Tampa (helped him move out there). Just got back and tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and nice out here in Houston so I am hoping to crawl under it tomorrow and look.

I appreciate the inquiry.

I crawled underneath, couldn't tell if the ground clearance was shrinking....lol (getting a little tight on space underneath). Is this the starter or relay?

Yup, that's the starter. It has a solenoid attached:

I see you have headers. I had to replace my starter years ago, I blamed the headers. I added an extra heat shield when I put the new starter in.

I used a Ford part, not sure of the exact one I used, but it was very similar to a F4TZ-11006-A.

It snaps over the solenoid. Googling the part number will get you all sorts of info.

That is the starter "solenoid". The only part I've had fail on this particular style of Ford starting system.
The "relay" (sometimes also confusingly referred to as the solenoid) is on the firewall. Driver's side of the engine compartment almost as far forward as the radiator. It looks like this when not installed-

On older model Fords this was the only solenoid/relay as the older starters didn't not have a solenoid piggybacked onto them. Later model Fords just had the one on the starter. Our RV's are the in-betweeners where for some reason Ford was putting two solenoids on things. For clarity we try an refer to the remote one as a relay as in a dual solenoid setup that is more correctly its function in this particular configuration.

Again. Not there on the V-10. It's in the link I posted before, that has this picture:

Interesting. Now I would wonder why the class C 6.8's used the additional external solenoid in 1999? As did the F450-550's and such. Sure eventually none of them used it but I wouldn't have expected F53's to lead the pack in that innovation. Oh well. What I get for looking at what vehicles I have on hand instead of exactly what the owner has.
