Aluminum roof (I think) help

I have a 1983 Holiday Rambler Ambassador with the what I think is an aluminum roof. The center seam, the vents and around pipes need to be resealed the seam between the roof and the front clip.

What is your advice on fixing the leak. Dico seems to be the product of choice. Stay away from flex seal ???

I owned a pop up before and I learned stripping off everything down to metal is the best option which if that can be avoided I’m all ears

Thanks in advance

The DICO products are certainly good. The key to success is scraping off all the old sealant then cleaning the area before applying the new product. New sealant over old will leak as the seam flexes.

You will be happy to learn that looks like the fiberglass roof on the two vintage HR I have had. Never had a leak other than a cracked vent cover.

Mine were 10 years newer. All I have done is re-caulked around the vents. I set out to replace the seam tape. The guy at the RV parts store set that it was probably unnecessary. When he told me the price, I agree.

I have an old TT and shed with a metal roof. I re-coat those every few years.

Good luck stopping the leaks.

Is the dico worth the money in comparison to a quality silicone caulk???

Use Dicor roof sealant.

Never use silicone on a roof. Nothing will stick to it and it has no uv properties.

We have a 93 HR, the roof is coated steel. 2 halves with a seam in the center running the length of the camper to the rear and front nacelles. Forget silicone. The main issue with that is adhesive qualities. It just doesn't stay stuck and leaks will reappear. Unfortunately its hard to see exactly from the pic but when that much caulk has been "schmooed" on, you probably need to remove at least some of it for a long lasting job. You may try a heat gun to soften whatever is on there now. Clean with denatured alcohol afterwards. Apply Dicor and TOOL IT INTO THE SEAMS! Thats the step that separates a fair job from a good job. You can use your finger, tongue depressor, dowel, whatever but push the caulk into any seam your repairing.

For what it`s worth, I have an 83 Pace Arrow w/ a metal roof like yours. I used Hengs Rubber Roof Coating. It was rated as one of the best products for metal roofs. Our MH is 30ft. and I found one gallon was enough for two coats. I can tell you it is a great sealer. It adhered very well. & is scuff proof. I caulked the seams, pipes, A/C cover etc w/ elastomeric caulking..I have no leaks & it worked out great for us. Hengs coating goes on easily w/ a brush & roller..It is very thick, so at first I had doubts a roller would work, but it did fine. It comes in white & grey. You can find it on eBay, where I bought it. It`s pricey, but worth every penny..
