Another Electrical problem.
In a compartment on the rear of the motorhome there is a 30 amp receptical where the generator plugs into the motorhome, but I cannot find a shore power connection. I made a male to male cord to plug in to shore power. Doesn't work. When I open up the receptacle box it looks like the generator was originally hard wired in. When I wire in a power cord to the receptacle wires, still nothing. Then I checked the power from the generator cord it does not read any voltage, ut when plugged in it works fine. Is there a switch somewhere that automatically switches. I'm lost. Sorry for the long post. Any help would be appreciated. Bought the coach in August.

The generator has a breaker on it, most likely on the very front, is it on?

The OUTLET is from the generator, the cord is from the RV. Plug the cord into
shore power OR plug it into the generator outlet.
(Power should NEVER be on a plug, only an outlet, for safety reasons!)

The plug is coming from the generator. If I start the generator there is no power at the plug or the motorhome. When I plug it into the receptacle I have power to the coach.

Somebody switched thing up.
You should not have power on a plug with blades you can touch.
That may have been installed to power a house during a power outage.
The generator power should go to a female outlet in a box.
The shore cord should be hard wired in and be able to be plugged into a power post at a camp ground OR to the The generator outlet.

So what you are saying is the receptical is actually the generator? The plug is the power to the coach.

Many older Motorhomes didn't have Auto Transfer Switches
That had an Outlet that was powered by Generator
RV Power Cord when plugged into the Gen Outlet would allow Gen to fully power the RV AC System
RV Power Cord when plugged into a Power Pedestal Out would allow Shore Power to AC System
Typical Gen Outlet in MH compartment...Black cord is RV Power Cord...Outlet is from GEN
You stated
If I start the generator there is no power at the plug
Post picture of your Set UP....
With Gen running that outlet should have 120VAC

Good it is good again!
Now please unmake the cord you made... that is very dangerous to have.

I already had. I'm going to make an extension cord out of it.

Good system to have
Now with your system, you should never have a ATS (automatic transfer switch) problem that seems to plague many. Once figured out, very easy to use, but some think it is a pain to have to exit the abode to plug in the generator.
Also, to store the cord, remember to plug it in then when on the road you are still able to start the Onan and have power or at any time you are not on shore power. Also, may I suggest that all connections should be checked for tightness and security?
Enjoy!

HAD an ATS....factory install
8 months later it failed...no GEN PLUS no Shore Power
FTng!!
Company sent NEW ATS 2 day delivery
RV Tech drove 30 miles to go pick it up
WE pulled the old one out....installed new one....DO WORKIE either
Called Company (Parallax)
Tech: "Just installed new ATS and it will not swap...no Gen/No Shore"
Parallax: "Yeah we have had some issue with those. Please return so we can troubleshoot then we can send another one"
We removed the New Bad ATS....
Installed a 125A subpanel....wired it with Dual 50A interlocked CBs
*Only one can be on at a time
Flip which one you want and POWER on
**Need a part......any hardware store. 50A CBs
I HATE ATS....LOL
