Any idea the history of this type of camper or to file for a title

I got this camper on a trade from my buddy for doing a transmission swap on his truck. from what i can see is that its a 1976 from what i can tell and only numbers i see is a 7 digit on the frame near the tongue.

It has a title, but someone stole the title from the camper when he had it on his property when it was used for storage, along with a plaque by the door where one used to be. He never got it in his name since it was used for a storage. He bought this from a trailer lot and this was taken to the back to get destroyed since the original owner got a new one( park model trailer). But this was years ago when he bought it from the trailer park.

My original plan was to tear it down and make it into a flat bed trailer since the frame is thick and has damage to the walls and roof where it leaked water.

Now my question is how would i go about getting a title for it. since i don't have a 17digit vin and no longer able to contact the original owners. I live in Illinois and you have to show proof of ownership, or have the person come with you to the dmv to file for a lost title. I looked everywhere else for a number, the electrical panel is gone for the trailer.

I tried looking up the name of the camper etc, my buddy told me its a holiday rambler president but from what i can tell its not. on the side it has written (The president by American Traveler). i looked everywhere for this name and with no luck.

It may be possible to file for a salvage title, I don't know IL laws.

There was not a 17 digit VIN used in that era. Best place for a answer is the agency that registers vehicles in your state.

Your best bet is to contact DMV. They can advise you with what they will accept. It could be a PITA process.

I also dont belive trailers of that era had 17 didget VIN;s. Also check with your local Sheriff dept. they may be willing to share with you some of the locations mfg's hide the VIN. Your automobile has it's VIN in other places than just in the corner dash windshield.

I called the one dmv, (snotty bitach) she told me that i would have to go back to the trailer park and get the information before even attempting to get a title. since its been a few years they no longer have the record of the trailer. i told them that it wasn't a 17 digit and its only a 7 digit i seen on the trailer frame. i know they will issue a new vin for it if i make it into a flat bed trailer, but was trying to figure out other locations on this where the serial might be at

Do you have a bill of sale listing the numbers on the frame as ID. ?
Will he give you a bill of sale ?
Many states like Kentucky are not a title state for trailers.

If you are making a flat bed trailer, just tell them it is all new construction. DMV will attach a new number.
