House power loss - from 120 to 8

Had the rig out for a couple weeks recently. No issues with the electric. I’ve got a 50amp rig on a step down dogbone to 15amp.

Hooked up an extension today to do some maintenance…. Incoming power tests at 120. Testing at only 8 at any outlets.

Trying not to panic. I’ve been planning to move to this thing FT in a month and limited time, dollar and human resources to make it all go.

My help has been encouraging me to give it up. Because of things like this.

It’s an old rig. With rodent damage internally to the wiring. It seemed like we found and managed the worst/most important of it but it will always come into question when I have a problem.

Guidance on what to check?

Are you saying those same outlets worked before?

Typically a 15a to 50a dogbone drops one of your power legs on the 50a side. So you only are feeding power to 1 of the 2 legs of power to your distribution box. This usually keeps higher amp items like the AC, Fridge, Microwave, etc from working in this configuration as 15a is not enough power to feed them.

If your rig is not wired correctly to use the particular dog bone you have then that could be your problem.

If you plug in to a 50a plug everything works? If so then its the combination of how your rig is wired with the dog bone you are using.

Could be as simple as the current dogbone needs to feed the opposite hot leg on the 50a side.

If you are not comfortable with testing AC Electrics then you may need to get some outside assistance.

Is it just the outlets with the low voltage or all of the AC powered stuff. You can check at the breaker panel. I'd check each outlet hot-neutral/hot-ground (3 light plug in tester is great) starting at the nearest to the panel.

We’re back to testing at 117-118.

Gratefully, it turned out to be a simple fix this time. As simple as the order in which things got plugged in to access shore power and being sure all draws were turned off beforehand.

Dogbone gets plugged in first. Instead of last.
