New Member- Help wanted 1981 Dodge Transtar Champion

My husband and I recently bought a Dodge 1981 TranStar Champion and we're working on some steering and brake issues. I have done simple mechanical work, but not this extensive. We are looking for someone with a bit of knowledge about these older RVs/vans.

Welcome to the forum.

You are joining a good group of folks here with good info to share. You might want to check the vintage RV thread here for ideas and a place to ask questions.

Enjoy the adventure.

Irvie,

What you might do early on is post you general location. Then someone can suggest a person/facility in range that can at least help if not do what it needs.

Age should never be an issue if you keep up with the required regular maintenance. What you have is a vehicle with no extreme technology. If you have the service books for that chassis, there should be nothing there that is outside of a decent technician's capability. Those books may be expensive, see below. You will have to identify the chassis (something like D30) to get the correct book and later to buy parts.

It appears that you can read, so there is nearly nothing stopping you. The only big issues might be some steering parts. There is no rocket surgery here. If your consort can read and follow instructions, there should be nothing the two of you can't accomplish. Tools that you need may cost, but with the cost of any shop being over 100$us per hour, you can spend a lot of money there before you even break even. And, then you own the tools.

What also happens is that A: You know a lot more about your coach and are now able to stop problems before they require major service and B:You will know that what ever was done was done correctly. (If it is a problem later, it will not be a big issue.)

I have a 40yo class C on a Dodge chassis, and it is great to be able to do most everything it needs with a small tool box.

My sister and BIL have a coach that is even older, and there is nothing that stops them from going where ever they choose.

Enjoy the excursion.

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

Sorry, I'm not a mechanic so can't advise you on that! Have fun and keep her between the ditches!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!
