Onan Genarator Problems

Hi,

I have a problem with my Onan Genset generator. I started it the other day and the start button did not spring back to the middle position. When I turned it off, smoke came from behind the nameplate and it had a electrical burning smell. I tried to start it a few days later and sparks starting to pop out from underneath the nameplate. Any thoughts?
Other than that after remodeling for 3 months has been fun to start driving.

Happy trails
Jason

You quite possibly burnt out the starter and the solenoid. The solenoid is only intermittent duty and will burn out if energized for more than a few minutes.
You will have to remove the cover and take a look.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, what does the part look like and do you a ballpark what I am looking at as far as cost to replace these parts. It's a Onan 6.3 kw 2000 watt generator that works on LP.

Thanks

That switch is mounted to the control board if it is the one on the genny and if you are handy at electronics you might could fix yourself but if it burned bad you can get a replacement at flight systems cheaper than Onan around $180 I think

I have not seen the generator of course but think that the burned switch/control is mounted on the genset rather than in the dashboard? If so can you uncover enough to get closeup photos to allow a chance to be a little more certan of just what is there? I agree with Poohbear7278 that it could be a simple repair costing a tenth of that of a new one.
It would be helpful if you would press on the clear potting compound that was poured in to see if it is in a firm jelly or a hard plastic form.
The big question is why it failed. if the switch was a cheap non-snap action one, a slow movement of the rocker can burn the contacts, a little more each time.
