Own an Allison MD3060 Trans from the 90's, YOU BETTER READ THIS

I got this email from a guy on the Oshkosh Diesel Chassis forum but it applies to all those with a 90's era Allison transmission and has critical information on where to get parts that are no longer available from Allison. I almost sheet myself until i read on further. I urge everyone to read this and make note. This is the email ,,,,,,,,,Hi All,
I haven't posted anything in a long time so I thought I would post my latest
experience as it may be good info for anyone with the Allison MD3060 tranny
from the early 90's.

We were out and about in our '93 Holiday Rambler/ Oshkosh X-line a couple
weeks ago. After the coach sat for a few days at the beach we started it to
leave. As we pulled out on the road while everything was still cold, we
accelerated up to 3rd gear and then had the infamous "DO NOT SHIFT" light
pop on for a second and then go off. It did this a couple more times. After
that it worked fine for the rest of the trip. Since then I started it ad
drove it cold again but the problem did not happen again. I checked for
error code in the controller and the only code was 3500 which is for a power

Now the interesting info. I really don't want to be stuck out on the road so
I called Allison to see what should be done. I ended up talking to their
service guy for a half hour. In a nut shell what he told me was that they
could hook up to it and get all the data from the controller and give me a
complete health check for a couple hours labor. He also said it could be the
controller failing and I better hope that is not the case. Allison no longer
makes the WTEC 2 controllers. The ones they have go for close to $5K and
they will only sell them to folks with emergency vehicles. I asked him what
to do if the controller is failing and he said "upgrade to a newer

I didn't like that answer much and did some research. I found that a company
called Transmission Instruments in Texas (
Transmission Instruments ) rebuilds WTEC 2 controllers. I
called and talked to a fellow named John there who was very helpful. I told
him my symptoms and he said that was common behavior for a failing
controller. I really wanted to buy a second unit to have a spare since they
are getting rare. He said he really didn't want to sell one without a core
but after talking a bit he agreed to sell me a rebuilt unit. I opted to also
buy a rebuilt shifter key pad which is attached to the controller. The total
with shipping was $1275. He also told me units made after '95 were made in
Mexico and aren't rebuildable. I asked what they do on the rebuild and he
said all 3 power supplies in the unit get replaced as well as the capacitors
that tend to leak and any other parts that look questionable. The parts he
puts back in are superior to the original stuff. He said he has done a
couple thousand units and that he doesn't get any returns. My plan is to get
the rebuilt unit back and then send my original unit in for a rebuild so I
will have 2 good units.

If you are driving a coach with the MD3060 and WTEC 2 controller I would
recommend you send the controller in and get it rebuilt before it fails. It
is $495 for the rebuild, a small fraction of what it will cost if it fails
on the road. Since the units are becoming rarer you can expect the cost to
increase in the future. End of email message ! Good info to have folks if you have the WTEC 2 electronic push button shifter. Mine is a 1993 but it has a shift lever, thank god,,it's on left side of the center console.You can see it just above the seat from this angle. but if you do have the WTEC 2 controller this is valuable information

Early 90's Allison TCM's had issues !
Mine quit in my Driveway - Lucky me- .
Allison came out with a test ECM and confirmed - Yes it's bad - $2800 later I'm rolling again- after that I learned about TI-- This all happened back in 2004 !

Thats why i posted this, to let people know they have an option that can save them thousands of dollars. I never realized that Allison charged so much for the part,, and now you can't even buy one !!!!
