my "Tardigrade": 1977 Elkhart Traveler, Ford E350

Bought this from the 5th owner with only 38,000 miles on it (it was never outside of western PA or eastern Ohio) and it came with all receipts including the original pink slip. Interior is classic 1970's funky: burnt orange shag carpet, yellow floral wallpaper in the bathroom, "harvest gold" bathroom fixtures and kitchen appliances (except the brand new Dometic fridge/freezer). I'm sticking with that vintage theme in the rehab -- got some Marimekko-looking mod prints in shades of brown, orange, lime and gold to recover the pull out couch and upholstered captain's chairs. Might even add a disco ball and lava lamp! Gonna remove the "nose" skin and window of the cabover (have had to demo major wood frame rot in it) and replace with smooth white painted aluminum with a graphic of Mr. Natural on it (some of my fellow "geezer" flower children my remember him from the "keep on truckin'" cartoons, the big-nosed bald bearded "guru" who wore a long white robe and clodhopper boots.)

Were there hub caps for that year? Mine cleaned up really nice and you'd be staying with the vintage look.

I've wirebrushed, primed and painted white the basic steel wheels since that shot was taken. Looks much better. I think "new" fancy wheel covers would just make the well worn camper look too shabby by comparison. I'm satisfied with the utilitarian white wheels now. I'll be more satisfied when I get the new skin on -- that project starts this coming weekend.

I was thinking the same thing, I thought it would look neat with the white wheels but the caps won over. Enjoy it.

The main problem to the stainless covers is that they cover the wheel. On a newer RV, that's not usually a problem, but on an older one, I think I'd like to be able to see any cracking on the wheel, which is not that uncommon as wheels age.

Outstanding!! Looks like it has never been used. The former owner must have kept it garaged and protected from the weather.

In fact both previous owners did. The original owner did most of the traveling for the first 19 years. The seller I bought it from bought it from his dad and used it locally camping in State Parks with his kids. Once they took off for college, he and his wife changed their weekend camping for motorcycle traveling.

He said that it has always been garaged and preventive maintenance taken care of. I cannot wait to get it out on the road.
