OK... so I've heard different accounts of the name and reason for this window.

Can somebody please give me the real scoop on name for and reason for this window?

Purpose of it?

It was my understanding that it's there to enable the driver to visually check for obstacles which are too close to show in the mirror.

Some say it's for pets to watch from, but if you look at semi trucks you'll see that many of them have the same window on the passenger door, and I seriously doubt it's there for pets. Much more logical is to see what's hiding on the curb side of the vehicle.

If that window is in front of the passenger seat, its a blind spot window.

Many big rigs have them in the passenger door.

I don't know the name, but it's very helpful for seeing small obstructions, small cars or motorcycles that are hanging out there the blind spot.
My previous motor home had one and I used it some. My current motor home doesn't have one and I can live without it.
Back when I drove a dump truck for a living it had one and I used it all the time. Take all of the 'stupid' things that people do to get past a motor home and multiply by 20 for a dump truck. The company I worked for was primarily road construction, and I was one of many that trucked out the debris from tearing up the road. That made me 'the enemy' to someone trying to drive on that road. So ANY way of passing that evil dump truck is fine. Including passing on the 'closed' side of the traffic cones when the truck is clearly signaling intent to go into that area. At times like that you need all the glass you can get to see what incredibly unsafe thing the little people are up to.

It was when Bob Tiffin nudged a car in the blind spot of a lane that the safety idea popped in his mind. What separates Tiffin Motor homes from the rest in the lot, besides offering extremes of luxury, is that they take into account the safety of the drivers and the passengers which is actually a unique feature to the motor home industry.

Some commercial trucks have had this feature long before Bob Tiffin “discovered” it. That being said, at least he actually did an extra feature to increase the safety of his motorhomes.
