Lloyd, it's going to be a busy summer for sure! I'm still working on the house also, LOL then there's the Jeep upgrades, MH maintenance, shop work, oh there's a couple of 5th wheel rv water damage estimates for people that know I have done that work in the past, I never seem to run out of things to do! I should go back to a regular job, I did less work!

They always said it seemed like we worked less before we were retired. I found this last winter a bit slow and was able to do a lot of reading but now that "spring" is here there is no end of things to do.

Can't Get Engine To High Idle

My 2011 Tiffin Phaeton has a Cummins ISC 8.3 engine on a Spartan chassis.

Normally when I want to turn on high idle (1000 rpms) from a regular idle I turn on the cruise control and hit the Set button. Lately when I hit the Set button nothing happens. The engine does not go into high idle. I tried turning the engine off and retrying but still nothing. After several minutes of trying it eventually did go into high idle. Not sure why it took so long. My fear is that soon it will fail completely. Any thoughts on why this is happening and/or what I can do about it?

Here's something weird. When initially starting the engine all the idiot lights illuminate during initialization including the green cruise control indicator. When driving, however, the indicator light is not on. I don't think I've ever seen it on! Thought?

John, I suspect the switch on the stalk for the cruise.

Do you know any other spartan chasis owners who can confirm the Cruise light should be on when the cruise it on? I think it should.

Note: I think it should be on when the cruise is on,,, when the cruise is set there is no change indicating that,,, just the cruise light lit.

Could take the cover off the steering column and try unplugging the plugs for that, make sure they are clean and tightly seated?

I can't really add anything to what Lloyd said, be a good place to start, we almost always started with unplug and plug with electrical gremlins, sometimes that's all it takes

On Mona when the cruise starts acting up, I work the switch back and forth a few times and it starts working good again! I think the contacts get dirty, and a little exercise gets them back working! I have also found out that sometimes the marker lights don't all come on, and I found that the battery combiner switch needs exercise the same way, work the switch back and forth a few times, and all good! I probably need to go thru all the connections, take apart, and clean them properly, but it seems I always forget till we are on the way out! One of the little gremlins from the coach sitting too much! Rail!

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I did spray some contact cleaner into the cruise control housing. Don't know if it made it's way where it needed to be but I was able to get the high idle to kick in on first try after spraying. I think (actually hoping) that the lack of cruise control light never coming on except when all lights come on during ignition start is a separate issue.

What a couple of days here, thrashing on the two cars, got a bunch of up grades on the black car, (Andy's ride) replaced the rear springs, axle, nuthing wrong with the old one we just revolve, old axle will be gone thru to make sure nuthing is wrong then it'll go back in the trailer as a spare. If something went wrong with one of the cars rear we can change it in 15 minutes. Swapped out both front spindles and lower control arms, put in different weight front springs too. Set toe and set the weights on the scales then jumped on the purple car, (my ride) found out why it was sooo bad on my last outing, I had 20 lbs of bite in the left rear wheel! When we got done I had 130 lbs, much better! So last night we ended up with a 15th place and no real damage, just a little rubbin! Happy with that, we finished on the lead lap, our lap times were not off that much from the fast movers, just some real good cars out there.Click image for larger version

Thanks Frank! Son came over and we checked lap times, able to do that as they are electronically recorded with a transponder that's attached to the frame of all the cars, we looked at everyone's fastest lap and we were off by 5 tenths of a second so I'm good with that, LOL
