Back then cars had more go than stop. That Pontiac probably had a 455 with 500 lb ft of torque, but honestly drum brakes did work, just got hot quicker than disks. The Buick’s of that era had steel lined drum brakes with finned aluminum outer castings to dissipate heat faster.

I remember my grandfather renting a U-haul bumper attachment so he could haul a trailer with grandma's Buick.
