I am crossing the border at Detroit, I have managed the squeeze through the narrow car lanes before only to be told "why didnt you use the truck lane its a lot easier". What lanes do you all use when crossing?

Last summer was the first time we used the truck lane. Crossed at Saint-Ludger QC into Maine, then at Calais / St Stephens managed to squeeze through the car lane. I'm always worried someone will give me the third degree if I use the truck lane.

Car lanes are prescribed for RV's at the Windsor/detroit and Sarnia /Port Huron crossings. The truck lanes are generally reserved for commercial traffic with customs broker papers. They tend to be higher but not much wider except for a lane for Overswzed vehicles with permits. I have been crossing at both since the mid 70's and never had a problem.
I have seen (once) a 5th wheel around 32 feet IIRC made to back up and switch from a commercial truck lane.
Here at the Bluewater bridge the truck lanes lead directly to the compound....not the hwy. Detroit Windsor tunnel has 1 truck lane (far left) with a signal light that tells if non commercial are welcome there.

I just got off the phone with a Border Guard and his suggestion was to always stay as far left as possible with an RV because the car lanes on that side are wider then the others to the right.
