Hi all,
We are newly-landed Canadian Permanent Residents, residing in British Columbia. We are in the process of arranging our insurance, and have hit (what appears to be) a big snag when it comes to coverage.
Our agent is quoting us coverage through Aviva Elite... who appears to be the only insurer who provides "full-timers" coverage. The problem is that they seem to be VERY restrictive when it comes to what they'll cover... and want to exclude coverage for things like our computers (a desktop and laptop), any jewelry, and our Motosat Internet Satellite dish and solar panels. To us, this is unacceptable. We want to have insurance coverage that actually COVERS us in the event of a loss... but the insurance company doesn't seem to understand that, since the RV is our home, we have everything on our RV that a "normal" person would have in their home.
What are other Canadian full-timers doing for their insurance? Are there other companies we should be investigating?
I appreciate any input you can provide.
Thanks.
- John

Lottsa Luck! AVIVA's reputation, according to the Ontario Government Insurance Company Monitoring Program; AVIVA has earned the honour of being the crappiest, most disreputable insurance company still licenced to sell insurance in all of Ontario!

So is a full timer not due the same coverage as a client/member that lives in a house?

Oh, great! I can only hope that Aviva's BC division isn't equally rated!

brad,
Most insurance companies seem to feel that the answer is "No!" Most don't really seem to understand RV's, let alone Full-timers.
We're expecting to meet with our agent later this week and, hopefully, iron out all of this confusion. I'll post the results here so that others will know in the future.
Thanks,
- John

Hello bcbounders: Have you looked at WayFarer (? spelling) RV insurance company. We have had several friends and people we know who are full timers in motorhomes, and 5ers and they use this company. I understand they are specicifically for RVers. I have also seen their advertising claiming this. And these friends have said good things about them. I have no personal experience with them so can not comment personally. Good luck.

Novi,
Someone else mentioned them to us... so we looked them up online and sent them a note. They responded, saying they cannot provide coverage in BC. But, from what I can tell, their coverage is underwritten by Aviva Elite! So... it's looking better and better that our current issue is merely one of misunderstanding/miscommunication between us, our agent, and Aviva.
We're hoping to iron this all out later this week. Once we do, we'll post the results back up here for any future viewers who are interested (or having similar problems).
Thanks!
- John

Aviva Elite, I'm told, bought Wayfarer sometime during the past 2 years.
Pilot is part of the same family but it will not write RV coverage.
You certainly don't want to change your home base (province) to Ontario since you will legally need a Class D license if your MH + toad exceed 11,000 KGs.
