During the winter months the gators are removed as a side benefit of snow plowing.

The 401 in Toronto is the busiest hwy in North America.All over Ontario at least, the road crews do a great job of ridding the roads of debris, including deer and moose carcasses when required.

I was going to have a little good natured fun with this but Googled and was surprised that the 401 IS the busiest highway in North America. Huh.

Truly, have been enjoying this read as some seem to have crossed in an understanding of something called GATOR, there are Gator Tires, Gator Golf Carts which are green and work along the roadsides of the USA in Florida Picking up roadside TRASH.

As for the 18-wheelers truck tires. Please understand every time a tractor-trailer is shipped out of the USA with NEW 18-wheeler tires on the Trailers they are removed and the junk, retreads are replaced with. A tire is the responsibility of the truck driver. But herein Florida they try and keep the roadways clear of debris.

I once saw a CANADIAN driving up I-75 in a Golf Kart and asked where he was going so slow. He told me back to Canada as it was getting too hot for golf. I informed him the highway was no place for a Golf Kart, asking, where is your car. He informed me he had a career lift it back to Canada, as he wanted to avoid the Love Bugs. Which also got here by a Florida Gator.

Hi, the reason is the volume of traffic surpasses all in North America. At it's widest, the 401 has around 22 lanes, although, not the most, the issue is traffic in both directions - not something to be bragging about. I spent my career in Toronto - using the 401 can be very frustrating.

In my province (Ontario), they took truck safety seriously and have several inspection blitzes per year … since that happened, the number of tire gators has been reduced since the tires are being removed before they fail. There were several highly publicized traffic fatalities due to entire wheels coming off of vehicles and striking/killing people in passenger vehicles. That has also been reduced significantly.
