US Bound Canadians

I just got back from Michigan from a 3 day stay. When we crossed over through Detroit, the CBP Officer boarded our coach for a routine inspection. We found out that most foods are not aloud to cross the Border now.
As of three weeks ago, eggs are not allowed, nor are sweet peppers, onions, cukes, tomato's (on the vine) & uncooked beef (we had homemade patties).
They almost cleaned out our fridge.
The rules are 'always changing' according to that Officer. The Officer was nice, understanding and sympathetic and was clear on the fact that it is our responsibility to know the rules, regardless of how new they are. Soooo, the take away is - check the CBP website on items allowed and not allowed when crossing over into the USA.

We crossed into BC then into Alaska two weeks ago and had eggs, some apples, and some hatch red Chile’s. All let is keep them and said if its open but in original packaging your good.

AFAIK and AFAICR, pretty much any uncooked/unprocessed veg & fruit is not allowed into the U.S., nor is meat in any form, processed/cooked/canned or otherwise.


Just drove very close the border on Friday (less than 200m from the 49th in places) but had no desire to cross even for cheaper fuel.

My rule of thumb is that if the US grows or produces it, then the raw form of whatever it is will not be allowed in. We (Canada) are pretty much the same, but as we grow or produce so much less the restrictions are not so onerous. We pretty much only take canned or processed goods across and shop the first day for everything else. Saves time as we can say only canned and processed goods aboard and usually get waved through.
