Redding Ca to Reno route suggestions.
Hi everyone. Looking for route suggestions from Redding Ca to Reno Nv. We're on our way back to Bullhead City Az from Anchorage Ak and would like to go thru Reno on the way. Never been there so that's our next stop. Just wondering if anyone has made the trip in an RV and what route you took? Thanks in advance for all the GREAT advise I'm gonna get.

I'd keep it simple and just take I 5 to I 80 and hang a left in Sacramento. I don't think there's any "easier" route over the Sierras. You'll have at least three lanes in both directions all the way over the pass.
Be safe

I agree with Rick; especially if you've just been to Alaska you aren't missing anything doing 5->80.
I assume you are doing this now, so we can dispense with the warnings about snow on the 80 and the CHP vigilance/checks for chains

Are you looking for the easiest route or the scenic route? Would you like to make a stop along the way and maybe spend the night somewhere along the way? Having been that route hundreds of times here is how I would go if you want a scenic route. In Redding take 299E towards Burney, Burney Falls State Park is a great campground, after you go through Burney at the main intersection of 299E and 89 you go south, In about 20 miles pick up 44 South and head towards Susanville, there you will pick up 395 right into Reno. It's a very pretty drive but it is also single lane for most of the drive with some hills. From Redding its about 200 miles going that route. Going from Redding to Sacramento to Reno is close to 300 miles but all interstate the whole route.

X2 for the post above! Why take the boring interstate route? Be sure to see the area around Lassen!

Thanks guys. Having survived both the Alcan and Cassiar highways, I've had just about enough "Up on the Wheel" driving for a while so we're kinda leaning towards the 5/80 route. We're in Corvalis OR today heading to Redding CA to visit friends so we're not totally committed too any route yet. With the exception of 10 days in Bullhead City at our S&B place, we've been in our Journey, on our journey since the 26th of April. Coming close to the end of our 14K mile shake down run and kinda looking forward to getting home. Sure do appreciate all the GREAT info/options. Safe travels and if you're ever in the Bullhead City area, look us up.

Living in this neck of the woods, I agree with the I5/I80 route....especially based upon your "Up on the Wheel" comment. Re going over the Sierras, be very careful of the slow moving 18 wheelers on the grades....AND the idiots that consider the speed limit "over the hill", as we call it, to be 85 mph.
Reno is a really neat town with a ton of things to do and see. I have not been there, but I understand there is a very nice RV park with full hook ups at the Sparks Marina. Sparks is adjacent to Reno.
FWIW, if you have any time to stay in the area, you can be at the North Shore of Lake Tahoe in less than an hour. Even having been in Alaska (I have been there also), you should still find Tahoe a gem and worth the visit. A drive around the Lake (about 70 miles) is neat if you have the time. And suggest you check out some of the "shacks" on the Lake at North Shore's Incline Village. Very nice! Also, if you like doing the "buffet thing", the Atlantis Hotel/Casino is the best in town....and one of the nicer places. If you like sushi, Sushi Sake' at the Eldorado is awesome....and the piano bar adjacent at Roxy's is a fun place with very good entertainment following the wonderful sushi. Following that, a walk through of the other two attached hotel/casinos (Silver Legacy and Circus Circus) is always fun. You can park free at the Eldorado and Circus Circus parking structures....they are downtown Reno.
Have a great trip!!

HeapBigEngin, you are just a wealth of GOOD information. Thank you sooooooo much : Huge Smile : I lived in Anchorage half my life thanks to the USAF and another 20 years with UPS. Still have S&B there as well as Bullhead City AZ. We're waiting for a phone call from a fellow UPSer that lives in Reno and we're hoping to meet up with him and his family while we're there. 85 MPH over the hill is RIGHT, experienced some of that today on the drive down I5 from Corvalis. Sheeeeeesh, theirs some crazy ones out there.
Thanks again,
Dennis & Linda

Your are very welcome. I just happen to love Reno....not everyone does. Glad to hear you may hook up with a friend that lives there. They will also be able to help you and point you off in some fun directions while you're there.
And BTW....thank you for your USAF service!! From one vet to another!

Head out on Hwy.44 from Redding....then you take 89 at Old Station......it runs into 36 about 6 miles from Susanville......and head to Reno. Good road and great country. If you need a place to stay...Susanville has some good rv parks.

I agree with cpaulsen, going up Donner's Pass (I-80) on the last leg to Reno is much more dangerous than any twisting, turning road through the woods. The road through Lassen Forest is one of the prettiest in the NorthWest, and we always see deer! When staying in Reno be sure to visit Silver City. If you haven't chosen a place to stay let me suggest Gold Ranch in Verdi.

Thanks everyone for the great advise. We decided to take the 44/16/395 route and it was absolutely beautiful. What a scenic drive. The Ponderosa Pines were so impressive. Only a little "up on the wheel" driving and the roads were great. Very nice leisurely drive thru the pines. We absolutely loved it. Camping in the back yard of some long time friends from Fairbanks that now live in south Reno. Making our way back south to Bullhead City the next couple of day but already planning another trip back to Reno. Safe travels everyone.
