Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest Campgrounds Closing Forever

Are you all aware that many of our National Campgrounds are now closed? I'm not talking about COVID 19 temporary closures here. I am talking permanent closures and deconstructing National Campgrounds. They are even considering demolishing CCC Civilian Conservation Corps historic shelters. here is the article I read in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: https://www.jsonline.com/story/trave...ds/6136025001/.

We need to stand up and contact or US senators and Congressmen ASAP to prevent the dismantling of our National treasures. Please write them now to refund the Parks System.

The Feds have never invested much in Wisconsin parks and forests. There are no National Parks or Monuments in Wisconsin. Mostly rustic campgrounds in Northern Wisconsin are all there is. Closing them is probably on their long term agenda.

Unless residents and especially residents near campgrounds light a fire under their Senators and Representatives, many more will be lost.

Much has been invested in Bolder Lake and Boot Lake, but staffing is extremely limited. Campgrounds close even though weekend reservations at electric sites are booked solid as soon as they open.

There was a time when gravel roads, pit toilets, and a hand pump for water was all that was need. Mow the grass twice a year to suppress forest growth in camping fields and occasionally clean the toilets. This does not cost much.

Today's standards of care push cost up. Is it necessary?

It would be nice to think adequate funding is a possibility but seems unlikely in our tax phobic society. We want stuff but don't want to pay for it. The cynic's view might be that they are paving the way to give even more Federal resources away to private "partners." So far, the land is still ours and campgrounds can be reopened or rebuilt if our thinking on funding becomes more mature.

The National forest situation is much the same here in Louisiana, infrastructure is in disrepair, the CCC built recreation areas are 80+ years old and are crumbling due to decades of deferred maintenance, some of the campgrounds already exist in name only with the camp sites being overgrown to the point where it is hard to distinguish them from the surrounding woods...
