Shut-ins is one of our favorite, yearly go to CG's. FHU, level cement pads.
Eldon Hazlet SP on Carlyle lake and north Sandusky on Rend lake are some of our favorites in IL.

Near St. Louis

The name is a bit odd. Maybe I should take a second look.
We just left Wooley Valley State park in north west Arkansas. (I am not sure of the spelling, different road signs had different spellings.) That is a days drive from St. Louis.
A remote park with full facilities in excellent condition. There were lots of 5th wheels there, but I did not see any MH's.
Fishing
Unpowered boats available
Bike trails

Try Hawn State Park outside of Ste Genevieve . Small, but beautiful.

We have been intending to go for years. Finally made it this year, and will likely go every year form now on, or at least til the kids graduate. It was awesome, great for both adults and kids, have fun, relax, etc. The features are as beautiful as they are fun! We stayed at the local park, had a pull-through spot and plenty of space for the family, as well as between other trailers.

Definition: A shut-in is a type of rock formation found in Ozarks streams where they carve through a mountain range, causing a complex of pools, rivulets, rapids and plunge pools. Shut-ins are inherently confined to a narrow valley or canyon, with the river valley widening out both above and below the formation.

Johnson shut-ins is a very nice unique area
The attraction is a stretch of creek full of boulders that creates little separate pools of water
Kids really love playing in the shut-ins
Elephant rocks park nearby is well worth seeing as well

The power company has a billion gallon water reservoir on the adjacent mountain. they pump water up to the reservoir at night and then use the water fall to generate power during the day. a decade ago the reservoir failed and washed out the entire area. Was a major disaster.

It may be the most popular SP in MO (lots of day-use visitors). If you have kids, they will love it (when it's warm enough to swim the shut-ins). It may be a little more of a hike from the CG to the actual shut-ins than you want to do, but it's a short drive to the parking lot by the shut-ins.
There is a section of the CG for equestrian, but much of the year you can camp there without a horse. I don't think that is widely known, so you can often get a site in that section on short notice even if the rest of the park is full.
