This past weekend we had a church banquet concert in a little town ouside of Buffalo NY. Driving the scenic NY state highway 5, I got a view of the Lake Erie State Park near Dunkirk NY. I'm telling you guys, this state park is beautiful as it looks out onto majestic Lake Erie. This park is a must do as a group. My guess would be that it is a windy park, so mid-summer might be a good time. Its only 45 minutes SW from Buffalo, and probably 1 hour SW from Niagara Falls.

The last time I camped there was in 1959. My wife and I rode through it quite a number of years ago. As I recall, the majority of the sites are level. Below is a link which provides a brief description of the park.

Lake Erie State Park - Dunkirk, NY

Unfortunately, the description doesn't surrender any useful information for RVers (i.e. size/length of sites, hookups etc). Maybe someone who's been there recently can enlighten us with some of that information.

Sorry we missed you George.

Lake Erie State Park is very popular around here. They recently upgraded their electrical to include some 50 amp sites. Some site lengths are 50', most are in the 30' to 40' length. Most all of the campsites have electric, and water spigots are located around the loops. However, we have not been there (yet), so I can not tell you how the manieuverability is. Yes, it can get breezy as it is located on Lake Erie, and it is about 10 degrees colder in the summer on the lake too. Great for those 90 degree days!

Here is the Reserve America link to see the layout of the park:

http://www.reserveamerica.com/jsp/co.../newindex.html

As for things to do, Chautauqua County has it all. Here is a link to check out, just click on "Attractons" or do a search for specific events. They do have their 2005 schedules up:

http://www.tourchautauqua.com/v2/homepage.asp

If anyone is interested for the summer of 2005, we can tour the park and give specifics for you.

I agree the camping area at Lake Erie State park is nice. We drove through the park several years ago, when we were actually staying at the Westfield KOA.

Unfortunately, I didn't think to jot down nice sites that would be located together, but I don't really recall seeing any "Bad" sites.

Camping on that part of Lake Erie is nice. It's about the only place you can actually see the sunrise over water without being on the West coast.

Joe:

I'm a little cornfuzed. Wouldn't you see the sun set on the west coast?

Hey Frank!

I think he means that your so far to the right of the lake that as you look west you'll see the sunset into the lake.

We use to boat on the lake and I have seen some incredible sunset on that lake.

Oops...my mistake. You all know I'm never up early enough to see a sun RISE. You're absolutely right. The sun sets on the west but normally you can't see a sunset on the water unless you are on the west coast.

Camping on the Eastern shore of Lake Erie you can see it set.

I hope you guys don't mind me bringing this thread back to the top. This actually would be a good place to check out Candace's new Rockwood Pop Up, and Warpath's new Showhauler. And who knows, maybe we'll have a camper by then too....

Yea, George, that sounds like a nice place to check out. I wonder how the weekend of 7/8 would work for people?

I'm all up for the idea of campign at Lake Erie State Park. It'd be great to see ya again Candace so I hope it works out.

As far as a date, the summer weekends are filling fast with the rally week, a week at the beach, and other planned trips. I know it's hard to plan ahead, but so far July 8th weekend is good for us.

Never been here before. I would have to believe that this CG would fill up very fast. We have stayed at Red House State Park there in Western NY. before and had to make a reservation 4-6 month before to get a site. I'll have to check out the reserveAmerica site to see what is available. OK, I checked out availability. Out of the two major loops with electric service. One loop # (4-30)is near the lake. It has about 30 sites with 25 still available. There are still 5 in that loop that are classified as premium sites, which look to be "lake front" sites. In the other loop #43-84 just about all are available at this time. At this time for us this weekend would be a open weekend. The following weekend we will start our Mohican State Park
8 night trip. The only monkey wrench is whether Diane has to be vacation bible school coordinator for the following week. She would have to be back early to get things set up.

I dont seem to be able to get into their sites right now. Dont know if they are doing mainenance or what. Will keep trying. Is your opinion that we go for the 4-30 area or 43-84/
