I hope this is okay to post here! Figure most of you are from Texas.

Registering new 2 me 5ver in Texas. I need to weight it and get it inspected.
So my question do I need to unhook 5ver on the scale to get weight of 5ver
they want or can I leave it hooked up with just the wheels on the
scales?

Any advice..

You need the full weight of the trailer. So trailer axles and landing legs on the scales, off the truck.
You also need an inspection sticker, along with a VI-30 "green sheet", which is actually yellow.

Most scales will not let you drop a trailer on the scale itself. You must weigh the truck and trailer together then pull off out of the way and unhook the fifth wheel,then go back and weigh the truck. Subtract and you get the trailer weight.

Our local CAT scales lets up drop just the trailer on it.

Nice. Every time I have asked they always told me no but, that was with a tractor / trailer. Could very well be different with an RV.

There should be a manufacturer plate on the trailer that indicates its GVWR. Isn't that sufficient enough? Any RV dealer should be able to do the inspection, as should any inspections station.

If the previous owner has the last registration it should also have the weight indicated on the paper work.

GVWR is not sufficient nor is past curb weight. Texas needs empty weight from a scale if the title is from out of state, period.
Not any RV dealer or inspection station can do it. There are inspection stickers for your truck/car/MH. Then there are stickers for trailers/motorcycles. I have both my certifications, but our station only carries trailer/motorcycle stickers.

The fact they want to charge by weight get's me.
Sounds like TX wants in my pockets and are going deep.

Thanks for all the replies, it's been hard to find some one to
inspect it but did. Local rv dealership I don't do any business with them period.

That's interesting. When we moved back to Texas from Ohio in 1997, the registrar took the weight of the 5th wheel we had at that time straight from my Ohio title that I was transferring - no weighing required. Either things have changed, or it all depends who is doing the title/registration or giving the information.

Gotta have a "green sheet" weight certificate for registering a Motorhome - not sure about 5th wheel or when the law went into effect. Even with that - Texas is still fairly inexpensive for first registration and annual renewals. Just 2 cents worth from DFW area.

Texas went to a new system a few years ago. FYI, here are the new fee schedules for heavy vehicles.

WEIGHT BASED REGISTRATION FEES
Vehicles 10,001 lbs. or more will pay the following registration fee*, plus applicable and local county fees
10,001-18,000 lbs. $110.00
18,001-25,999 lbs. $205.00
26,000-40,000 lbs. $340.00
40,001-54,999 lbs. $535.00
55,000-70,000 lbs. $740.00
70,001-80,000 lbs. $840.00
Over 80,000 lbs. Varies
*Does not include diesel fees for commercial vehicles

Oh, I did have to present the proof that a safety inspection had been performed as well as the sheet from the inspection station validating the 5th wheel's VIN, but as I said, no weight sheet was required back then - perhaps that's because the weight information was present on the Ohio title. Just my experience....

Wait - I too AM in Texas and I never needed to weigh it to inspect it... (although I did just for my own info)

I had the combo weighed at a cat scale for $10, brought the 5er to storage area and came back within 24 hrs and weighed truck only to get difference for my peace of mind...

Called the Camping World on I-35W in Fort Worth and scheduled it, was there maybe 20 minutes and got it inspected no problem, no questions about weight...
I just got it done a few weeks ago for $14.50 IIRC, so the rules must have JUST changed

If your vehicle is already a Texas title, all you need is a safety inspection. $14.50.

If it is an out of state title, you need a weight ticket of actual weight, a safety inspection for $14.50, and a VI-30 "green sheet" for $1.00.
License plate tags are completely different.
