Route for Memorial Day Rally
I know that I'm a bit ahead of the curve but I was trying to figure a route to get to the Memorial Day Rally. Street Atlas is trying to send me down I-35 to exit #251 then along Route ! to Route 71 to Route 290. I suspect that Route 1 will not be a fun drive.
I can force it to exit onto Route 190 at Belton, picking up 281 at Lampasas. That ends up taking us through Marble Falls and I'm not much of a fan of that either.
Faced with the choice of two evils, which is the lesser? I suspect that I know the answer already but wanted to ask anyway. Mileage wise, they are about the same. We aren't sure that we can make the Memorial Day Rally but I wanted to plan for it anyway.
Thanks for your suggestions,
Charlie

Personally, I do just about anything to avoid Austin, especially right before a holiday weekend.
I would cur over to Lampasas on 190 at Belton or use 29 at Georgetown to go over to Burnet and use 281 into Johnson city. Much better trip than going through Austin

Bob and I use 281 any time we can to get away from I35. It really is a nice road, but there are towns involved and stop lights. But, the traffic is usually not too bad.
Hope that helps

Thanks, Ken and Chris. Most of 281 is pretty good road but, for whatever reason, I manage to catch Marble Falls at the wrong times. I've had it take me over an hour just to get from one side to the other, with the lights and things. I'm not fond of the decent onto the bridge either. Climbing southbound is not nearly as bad as decending northbound. OK, I'm a wuss.

Charlie we always take 281 when heading anywhere in the hill country. Even going thru Mareble Falls is 10 times better than going thru Austin.
By the way we are at Alamo Fiesta in Boerne right now. Had to attend a funeral for and old friend in San Antonio this morning. Of course it is very rainy and cold here. On a brighter note we found diesel fo $187.9 here in Boerne.

Don -
You and Pat could have rented a private jet out of Waco to fly you to San Antonio for a LOT cheaper than that!!!! $187.9 per gallon!!!
Charlie - in answer to your question, I'll leave to the navigtional experts who know where they are going, but in light of the "direction" this topic has turned to.... I don't think anyone can afford to come to the Memorial Day Rally at those fuel prices!!!!!
TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FUNNY!!! Don, we LOVE YA! I'm stiiiiiiiiiiiiiiillllllllllllllllll rolling on the floor laughing!

We just learned of our frieds death on Tuesday and the family invited us to stay with them but at the last minute we decided to take the trailer and stay here at Boerne since it was only about 20 miles from the church were the services where held. We didn't get to Boerne until late last evening. The burial was at Ft Sam this afternoon with a reception at the familys home afterward. So our day was pretty full.
We are pulling out for home around noon tomorrow so if you and Kris are available and would like to get together for breakfast somewhere in the morning we could meet you. Just give us a time and place.

Aw! Austin driving is 10 times better than Houston, and Houston is my route out of town. Just plan on driving during non-peak hours. (If there is such a thing.)
