I go the easy route.... I-59 from Birmingham to Chattanooga, then I-75 to Knoxville, then a short ride to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. 59 is a little bumpy, but it don't last forever.

Will be leaving from Dorthen Alabama to Gatlinburg to Gatlinburg Tenn would 82 or 231 be preferred ? My previous route mention is 80 miles shorter it's probably slower and use more Diesel with a lot of city to city with some obstacles. We live in NM and have never seen the gulf cost since where in the area decided to visit NC . Thank you the help .

I'd go Dothan to Montgomery on 231, I-65 to Birmingham, then to Chattanooga and Knoxville. A few more miles but no slow, crooked back roads to deal with.

Some enjoy traveling the two-lane back roads more than the interstates.

But, you have to go the way that works for you.

I'm taking the route you mentioned but at Sweetwater 441 to 321 to Gatlinburg cuts out Knoxville 10 miles shorter a bit slower is that route safe enough for 50 ft rig ?

I've never been that way, I stick to the main four lane roads when I can.

27N isn’t a bad rd to travel. It’s 4 lane once you get through LaGrange. You can take the bypass around Carrollton, after that it’s a straight shot to Rome. Once I got to Rome I’d work my way back to 75.

For us and know the are, we would also stay on the main roads. Shorter is not always better with RV's. 321 from Townsend to Pigeon Forge has a few tight curves. Will be challenging but it is drive able. You choice. Our friend took a class c that way and he was happy to be in Wear's Valley where he camped.
