Pets in Florida
In two weeks we are headed to Florida , Pensacola and Navarre area and then down to Orlando. We just heard a rumor that your dogs are not allowed on the beach. Does anyone know if this is true ?

Dogs are not allowed on beaches which are part of a state park in Florida. There are some "dog friendly" beaches. I found this by googling "Florida dogs on beaches".

Yup, sadly it's true. MOST beaches in FL do not allow dogs. There are a FEW that do, but you have to find them.
I spent a lot of time seeking out paw-friendly spots on our trip in FL:
-> In the Panhandle area I'd recommend the "Forgotten Coast" area. The beach just south of St.Joseph State Park (Cape San Blas) is paw-friendly, as is Carabelle Beach and St.George. I actually wrote a post specifically about paw-friendly panhandle beaches HERE.
NONE of the state parks west of the Forgotten Coast allow dogs on the beach, but there are small "spots" of paw-friendly areas outside the state parks (e.g. Bay View Park in Pensacola). This article has a good summary:
http://traveltips.usatoday.com/dogfr...le-107369.html
-> As you're going south there's a state park with a paw-friendly beach just south of Tampa at Fort De Soto. I've got info on that HERE.
Other than that not a lot of paw-friendly sand around...

Was in FL several years ago, before we traveled with a computer. We spent several hours and many miles trying to find a dog friendly beach near the space center. We finally gave up. We could even drive our car on the beach at Daytona. While parked there an officer pulled up next to us and sternly warned us not to let the dog out. However, they were not worried by all of the old clunkers leaking oil on the beach.

honeymoon island in the tarpon springs/pam harbor area has a pet section of the beach (we actually go there when we don't have the dogs too as we feel its a nicer beach)

Dog beach
Brevard County (Cocoa Beach & Melbourne) has added some dog beaches last year but as a frequent beach walker I'm not sure how long that will last due to the piles of poo that disrespectful owners are leaving.

I think these all come about from dis-respectful and irresponsible dog owners. We have an island beach here that does currently allow dogs, one of the very few during summer months; rule 1: on a leash and rule 2: pick up after your dog. On my last visit, 8 dogs on beach, 7 no leash, several dog fights and one small child nipped by loose dog. Walk down beach was like a mine field of dog droppings.
I can just hear the outrage coming when rules are changed to no dogs. Then those same folks will claim it was someone else's fault!

X2 on the owners. It isn't the dog's fault.
Children have a right to use the beach also and be able to dig in the sand safely.

Siesta Key, by Sarasota, has a dog-friendly beach just by the main Village.

Personally, I'd rather be on the beach with some dogs over some of the people and their kids. The dogs are better behaved and don't throw litter all over the place.e
