Even though we've just returned from a 2 week RV trip and need a little "Home Time", we'll be ready for more away time by the end of August!!

Please sign the Brackens up for Friday evening and leaving Monday - the usual 50 amp for the 33' MH including a toad..... Ohhhhh and Spunky will be there as well!

Cheers

What is the best route from DFW to the CG? Down I35 to Loop 1604? Or go Fort Worth via Hwy 281? Anybody have any experience with 281? or TX-16?

Hubby says if he were traveling that route, you can would take I-35 but there's lots of traffic, but he would take 281 south to 46 on through Boerne to Pipe Creek - then take 16 on into Bandera.

Good roads, moderate traffic, more scenic than interstates, etc.

I agree with Rusty's route...I avoid I-35 anytime I can.

According to Rusty, another good route would be US281 to Johnson City, then US290 to Fredericksburg, then TX16 to Kerrville and TX173 to Bandera.

Whatever you do, DON'T take TX16 from Kerrville to Medina to Bandera. There's a stretch of road on TX16 locals call The Hill between Kerrville and Medina that is NOT suitable for RVs - in fact, the highway signs warn trucks to take TX173. Steep grades, hairpins, switchbacks, etc. that you would not believe! It's a great motorcycle road, but I wouldn't do it in a motorhome or towing a 5th wheel.

46 from Boerne to 16 is a little hilly with some sharp curves. Take it easy and you'll have no problem. I've driven it several times with tag axle Executive towing a Suburban. Other than that short stretch 281 and 46 are great roads.

The I-35 route googles up at a shorter time than Tx 16 or 281 routes. I'm not into lots of turns and twists, or stops. But I hate that Loop 1604 in San Antonio.

For those of you that don't know me yet, I like to take a problem and chew on it until there's no flavor left.....tee hee.... a quote from a favorite movie of mine.

Well, yes, until you have the inevitable 25 vehicle crash on I-35 that ties traffic up at a standstill for 4 hours.

That's why I prefer US-281 that parallels I-35, but as always, JMHO. YMMV.

got it!

The issue with me is I am right in the middle of the DFW metroplex, so its 20 miles west to get to I-35W. Then if I stay on I-35, it veers back east, then a real pregnant loop back west. If I go 281 its about 30-40 miles shorter, but of course, more stops and turns, but overall, the 281 is the best route I believe....

What say you all to this route? Any concerns?

Kent it is worth taking the route I suggested just to stay out of the Austin IH35 parking lot which actually starts in Salado and ends in Buda no matter the time of day or night. Just jump on IH 35E in Dallas and take it to Belton then US 190 is a freeway to Copperas Cove and 4 lane to Lampasas. Most of 281 is 4 lane.
