We usually stay at Isla Blanca /Cameron county park, couple hundred yards from KOA. You need to try Pier21. great seafood , margeritas & sunsets, right next to KOA. And go to Antonios Mexican Restaurant in Brownsville, chicken kababs grrrreat. Plus everything everyone else said. We love the place, plan on going down next month.

South Padre KOA

Beautiful place, we stayed there this past August. Very convenient location and lots of restaurants, bars and shopping within walking distance. Also the island has a free bus service where you it can take you sight seeing if you don't mind the public and stops. My kids are late teens early twenties and they walked across the street to Schlitterbahn 2 days in a row and loved it, while my hubby and I hung out in peace and quiet. The KOA has a great restaurant and bar if you don't want to cook.

We were there the other day - didn't get a good pic of the place but the food was great.

The only problem that I know of for camping on the beach or on SPI is the salt spray that will rust any exposed metals. Born and raised in Galveston, I am very aware of the results of the salty air. Keep everything sprayed down as often as possible.

I read this somewhere before... the Texas Gulf Coast salt air will rust plastic... grew up between Houston and Galveston and can pretty much attest to that... it's good for a weeks stay or so - then a healthy wash and wax all around - over - under... etc.

Well we've been at the Lost Alaskan cg for the past 3 days. Leaving tomorrow for Big Bend National Park area for the next week, then we continue east making our way to the Gulf Coast of Texas. We have totally enjoined our stay in Alpine,Tx.

Definitely wash the rv undercarriage too - not just the exterior when you are exposed to the salt air. That would be anywhere that is within 200' from the possible salt spray. I go to Galveston and park on the Seawell often. I always rinse the coach when I return.
