Project!

Greetings fellow campers! I too am new to the pop up world. I just bought a project...er...pop up in the form of a 1992 Viking (sp175 I believe). My research tells me it had the L & W cable lift system. The roof does not move when I crank the winch and there is no resistance. I will pop the top when I get more muscle here but thought some of you would have a good idea of what maybe wrong and what to look for. Thanks in advance, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am not familiar with the cable lifters working mechanisms, but if you have no resistance when cranking then it sounds like you have a broken cable/fitting. If you are mechanically inclined then try and source a repair manual and DIY. Otherwise have a dealer fix it properly for safety.

Thanks. Got the toof lifted yesterday and it looks like a bomb went off. The lift cables are broke and parts here and there. I think the previous owner tried to repair it. Now I need a diagram so I can get parts ordered.🤥

Question #2 Once you got the roof up, how did the canvas look?

Take a look on Youtube for viking pop up camper cable repair as I'm sure many of the older pop-ups have cable issues.

Yeah, have seen a couple of videos. The tent part is vinyl not canvas in this and nearly perfect. A couple of minor areas that need re-stiched and a small hole in one of the clear plasic windows and new bungies. No water damage and the uposltry looks like new. I will have to rebuild the flip over galley sink and cooktop cabinet. All in all a good find for $490 I think. Got some good info from Vikkng cs now owned by Forest River. 🕺

Besides having to fix the lift cables, that is a nice buy for $500. You will not lose any money on your purchase.

We tent camped for 15 years before we started looking for a used pop-up, but everything we looked at had rotted canvas. We ended up buying a new (1999) Coleman pop-up for $6400. Sold it 6 years later for $4200.

Same here. Since there was no crank handle at the dealer (CW) and I couldn't open it, it was a gamble! I won this time! Have to rebuild the galley cabonet and replace the sink & cooktop but not a big deal.

Got all new cables coming this way along with one spring and a couple of lift arm bushing sets. I'll get in there and take some before pictures to post soon. Parts should be here in a week or so and I can get started maybe at the end of March, weather permitting.

Dont know if its your pic or not but roof looks a bit concave. Best to check and recaulk all roof seams. Then wash and wax the entire exterior. Lube the axle bearings. Lube the hitch ball latch. Check lights and replace old, dim bulbs. Fun project. Cute camper! Reminds me of our old Starcraft StarFlyer
